Former TT winner Hillier joins popular Australian rider Davo Johnson in the new team, which has attracted two of road racing’s biggest names in their debut season.
Hillier has amassed 14 podiums since his debut at the TT in 2008, with victory coming in the 2013 Lightweight race. He joins OMG following a 10-year stint with Bournemouth Kawasaki, a run which saw him bring home 44 top 10 finishes from 49, and 28 inside the top 5.
He also has an outstanding record at the Northwest 200, claiming the win in May’s Superstock race as well as podiums in the Superbike and Superstock classes, a feat which saw him named man of the meeting.
Hillier joins Davo Johnson in competing in the Superbike and Superstock classes on-board the BMW S1000RR, and the Supersport aboard the Yamaha R6, and the English rider admitted he was looking forward to a new challenge after 14 years affiliated with Kawasaki;
James Hillier, OMG Racing
“I’m really looking forward to a new chapter in my career for 2020 with OMG Racing and riding the new BMW S1000RR and Yamaha R6.
Making the decision to leave Bournemouth Kawasaki, after a really great 10-year relationship, wasn’t one I took lightly. There are lots of challenges involved in moving teams and starting new relationships. I’ve had an affinity with Kawasaki for 14 years now and switching machines throws up its own challenges, but I’m really excited by it all.
OMG Racing are putting together a strong package around me, I’ll be working with a Crew Chief I know, and very closely with the team to develop the bike.
With any kind of motorsport, knowing when to make changes is pivotal to success. It’s definitely the right time for me to make this move and I can’t wait to get started!”
Paul Curran, OMG Racing Team Principal
“It’s fantastic to be working with James for the 2020 roads season, he brings a huge amount of experience and consistency to our team, as well as race-winning talent. He’s one of the names fans always look for on the live timing, which shows he knows where the sharp end is.
The BMW S1000RR presents him with a new challenge as well, we’ve seen it’s a capable bike with the results from this year’s TT, so with James on-board we’re seriously looking for podium finishes.
Attracting James to the team adds to our credentials as a team and shows just how seriously we should be taken at the 2020 races, with him alongside Davo Johnson we have two riders capable of great things and great results. “
Alan Gardner, OMG Racing
“James Hillier is one of the biggest names in road racing from the last 10 years and has consistently finished inside the top 10, taking podiums and a race win on the way.
The fact that he has decided to take his first step into a new team with us adds a lot of weight to our attempt to really shake up road racing. With James and Davo in our corner for the 2020 season, all eyes will be on us to give them a bike capable of putting them on the podium, and I have no doubt our team can deliver.
2020 is shaping up to be a seriously exciting year for us, both on the circuits in British Superbikes and now on the roads, we can’t wait to get started, to share it with our passionate fans and of course, give it our all to bring home some silverware!
