Williams and Farrell set the pace in shortened MGP practice.

Headlines

Tuesday evening was a sharp contract to Monday; it was much cooler; there was a covering of grey cloud and a fairly stiff breeze for the riders to contend with. After a 30 minutes delay to road closing; caused by road traffic collisions; the first session; for the Supersport / Senior machines; began at 18.50. The riders started in pairs, led away by Jamie Williams and Chris Cook.

Williams was the first to sweep around Schoolhouse Corner and then brake hard for Parliament Square. Cook was about 50m behind; both were neat and fast. Davey Todd was next through on his Classic TT Ducati; Michael Mace was right behind him and no doubt picking up some valuable information from the TT star. Rad Hughes, Michael Gahan, Andrew Farrell, Michael Rees, Craig Szczypek and Johnny Stewart followed in quick succession. The action was good for the spectators who had gathered trackside. Shaun Evans was a tad rapid coming into the square and had to run out into the parking area; he was able to make the turn but lost some time. With a shortened timescale, about half of the riders opted to do just one lap as many were due to go out in the second session.

Fastest rider in the session was Jamie Williams at 113.304mph. Unsurprisingly, Cook was next best at 117.287mph. Toby Shann set the third best; on his second lap; at 117.130mph. Caomhan Canny was 4th, Michael Gahan 5th and Michael Mace 6th. The top 12 riders all lapped at over 116mph; promising that we are about to be treated to some very close racing.  Grant Thomson led the newcomers at 115.694mph; with Eddy Wormald next at 113.877mph.

The second session for the Supertwin / Junior machines was well attended and provided good entertainment for the spectators. Liam Chawke was first to reach Ramsey; followed closely by Jamie Williams; both on the perfect line and fast. Owen Monaghan was next; then we had Andrew Farrell and Lewis Arrowsmith, just inches apart. Alex Sinclair was next, 10 metres ahead of last year’s Junior Classic MGP winner, Harley Rushton. A few groups had formed, and these added to the interest for the spectators. Davey Todd had a brief stop in the square to check something on his Classic Senior Honda. Local newcomer Luke Blevins finally completed his first unescorted lap on his troublesome Aprilia.

Most riders opted to continue for a second lap; many had passed through the square when the red flag was displayed; bringing the session to an abrupt end. As yet, no details of the incident have been released officially.

Andrew Farrell ended the evening with the best lap of 113.304mph. Chawke set 113.242mph, with Williams third at 113.135mph. Toby Shann also lapped at over 113mph, Alex Sinclair and Owen Monaghan completed the top 6; at 111.734mph and 111.693mph respectively. Best of the newcomers was William Grant at 105.381mph.

Wednesday is a rest day for the MGP riders; the stage will be taken over by the Classic TT first practice session; weather permitting.
