The Southern 100 meeting was brought, tragically, to an early end by an accident at Stadium Bend; one that claimed the life of James Cowton. The accident happened on the second lap of the Hunts Motorcycles600cc Challenge Race. At Church Bends, James was in second position; immediately behind Dean Harrison. Joey Thompson held 3rd; with Adam McLean 4th; Mikey Evans, Ivan Lintin and Jamie Coward were close behind. These latter three riders were brought down in the accident; Ivan was critically injured, Mikey received arm and leg injuries; Jamie received some broken fingers and heavy bruising but is otherwise okay. The Manx authorities are conducting an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
James loved racing at Billown, he won 6 times at the Post TT meeting and had one victory to his name in the S100. He had been right on form at the event this year; challenging for victory in each of his races.
He was always welcoming to those who visited his awning; as were his family. He was quiet; self effacing and a real gentlemen; he will be very much missed in the road racing paddocks. We offer our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Rest in Peace James; it was a privilege to have known you.
