As the Moto2 season heads into its midway point, rumours have begun to circulate about how the grid may shape up for 2026.
Current Moto2 championship leader, Manuel Gonzalez, is looking set for a step into MotoGP for next season. After an impressive test aboard a Trackhouse Aprilia, Gonzalez has done himself no harm in placing himself in the shop window of GP-class teams. Given that he tested for Trackhouse, the American squad initially seemed to be the most logical destination for Gonzalez. However, with the recently announced continuation of Jorge Martin and Aprilia, the destination for Gonzalez has become a little less clear. With Ogura now expected to stay put, and Raul Fernandez being on a two-year deal, it means Gonzalez will be forced to look elsewhere, unless Trackhouse decide to let go of Fernandez early.
LCR and Gresini (the latter according to Now Moto News) have been floated as potential teams for the current Moto2 championship leader. Both of these options would require reshuffling their current MotoGP lineups. Rumour has suggested that LCR and Idemitsu may be parting ways, which would open the door for a second European rider at the Italian outfit.
Aron Canet currently sits second in the Moto2 world championship, just five points behind Gonzalez. Despite this, the Spaniard has claimed that is yet to be approached by a MotoGP team. Now in his sixth year in Moto2, you would suspect that Canet is eager to move out of the intermediate category. As such, the Spaniard has reportedly started looking for rides in the World Superbike championship – and his name has recently been touted to fill the shoes of the departing Toprak Razgatioglu at BMW.
Such a move would make Canet the first middleweight class title contender in recent memory to bypass MotoGP completely en route to the Superbike paddock. Nonetheless, Canet’s suspected switch to a superbike would be an exciting prospect for the class.
The current third-place man in the Moto2 standings is Brazilian rider Diogo Moreira. In light of recent form, Moreira is the most exciting prospect for Brazil since Alex Barros. Moreira has finished no lower than second in three of the last five races. Moreover, the Brazilian has finished outside the top five on just one occasion so far this year.
This impressive form has reportedly put the Brazilian in the crosshairs of Yamaha for the 2026 season. Recent rumours suggest that both current Pramac riders may be out of a seat by the end of 2025. Such a move would make way for Moreira to step into Yamaha’s satellite team alongside Toprak Razgatioglu.
Moreira is currently backed by Yamaha Brazil, who supply him with training bikes; thus, a future with the Iwata factory in MotoGP seems to be a logical step. Whether Yamaha ultimately opts to retain one of their more experienced riders for 2026 is yet to be seen; however, it is clear that Yamaha is keen on adding the Brazilian to their ranks in the future.
Outside of the top three riders, Jake Dixon has reportedly been approached by Honda’s works World Superbike effort in the team’s expected reshuffle for 2026. However, Dixon has reportedly been given the opportunity to continue with Marc VDS into next season.
According to Now Moto News, there is the possibility all-Turkish Pramac Yamaha lineup in Moto2. With the arrival of Toprak Razgatlioglu into Pramac’s MotoGP outfit, it has been surmised that both Can and Deniz Oncu will move into Pramac’s junior outfit. Not only would this bolster any potential Turkish sponsorship for the team, but it would create a potential pipeline for future Turkish MotoGP stars.
