MotoGP’s unpredictable title fight hits halfway mark in Germany
MotoGP: The shortest circuit on the calendar readies to spring surprises in 2026’s rollercoaster Championship battle
Four riders covered by 25 points as we approach the halfway mark of what already feels like a full season’s worth of action, drama and suspense. MotoGP has delivered the storylines and headlines in the first ten Grands Prix of 2026 and as we get set to close up for summer, does one last Sachsenring surprise await? The title race could be turned completely on its head at the German GP and it’s hard to predict what the outcome will be.
#93 TERRITORY: Sachsenring King Marc Marquez guns for tenth German GP win
Let’s start with the one rider who can’t be Championship leader going into summer: Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team). The Sachsenring is very much the #93’s backyard and despite a conservative weekend at Assen, the reigning World Champion is the favourite for a double this weekend. Looking for a tenth MotoGP victory at the shortest circuit on the calendar, he may well want to leave his rivals pondering going into the summer break if he was to inflict maximum damage in the standings.
DUELLING TEAMMATES: Martin and Bezzecchi have taken charge
The four ahead of him are all covered by just 25 points, the standings really could look very different going into the break. Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) is the Championship leader for the first time since he was crowned World Champion in 2024 and the 2023 German GP winner is keen to keep that lead ahead of teammate Marco Bezzecchi. The Italian suffered a huge crash at Assen but despite being battered and bruised, will be in action this weekend. Seven points split Martin from Bezzecchi, it’s all to play for at the very top.
HOT PURSUIT: Di Giannantonio and Ogura give chase
Chasing the top two overall and within striking distance of the Championship lead is Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team). The Italian continues to grind out results and capitalise on bagging points when his rivals don’t. He was a contender in Germany last year until, like Bezzecchi, he fell from the podium places. Also in the hunt, MotoGP’s newest winner: Ai Ogura (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team). 25 points back, the Japanese rider was a star at Assen but the Sachsenring poses a new challenge. No Japanese rider has had back-to-back wins and the last time one led the Championship was 51 years ago… the most exciting sport on Earth may well give us one big surprise at the halfway mark.
OUTSIDERS: Fernandez mighty, Bagnaia and Acosta seek redemption
Raul Fernandez (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team) was a Sprint winner last time out and second in the Grand Prix, propelling him to sixth overall and 55 points behind Martin. Off the back of his best weekend of 2026 yet, the #25 is in good form. Then come Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), both of whom suffered Sunday DNFs last time out. Pecco’s a German GP winner from 2024 whilst Acosta is fresh from Carpal Tunnel surgery. Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) is ninth overall in the Championship after a heroic Sunday in the Netherlands saw him finish fifth and whilst teammate Fermin Aldeguer is tenth, he is unfit following his Assen crash.
KEEP AN EYE ON: surprises further down field
Eighth from Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) at Assen, he’s looking for more of the same in Germany or more, whilst Luca Marini (Honda HRC Castrol) is just five points away from the top ten overall. His teammate, Joan Mir, sets aside his Assen crashes to start fresh in Germany whilst a joint-best Sunday and third consecutive top ten last time out for Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3) sees him gradually progressing up the order. Diogo Moreira (Pro Honda LCR) has sights on the top ten in Germany, with the Brazilian rookie tied on points with Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) who aims for the same.
Consistently in the top ten battle, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was P7 in Germany last season whilst the likes of Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP duo Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlioglu, as well as Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), will hope the Sachsenring’s layout helps their packages. Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) is edging closer to a first top ten of the season at the circuit where he picked up his shoulder injury last year. Finally, Cal Crutchlow (Castrol Honda LCR) continues to replace Johann Zarco for a fifth appearance of 2026; the Brit has three previous rostrums at the Sachsenring.
Can Marc Marquez do the double this weekend and head into summer even closer to the top? Can someone spring a surprise in #93 territory? We’re about to find out in the Liqui Moly Grand Prix of Germany! Tune in.
