Acosta ends Saturday on top as the final day of Shakedown testing concludes.
The curtain came down on the 2024 MotoGP™ Sepang Shakedown with rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) on top, with the number 31 content to continue making headlines. A superb 1:58.189 on the final day saw him lead test rider Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) by 0.066s, with CASTROL Honda LCR’s new recruit Johann Zarco completing the top three.
Acosta dazzles
Despite a couple of small crashes on the final day – one in the dry at Turn 11 and one in the wet at Turn 15 – Acosta only continues to impress. His time would have placed him P5 in last year’s Sepang Test overall standings, and there are still three more days to go in that event next week.
On the final day, Acosta was lapping with KTM’s carbon chassis on both of his GASGAS bikes, indicating this may well be the direction they’ll be heading in for the season. It will be interesting to see what new parts Acosta will test on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Malaysia, as he’s joined by teammate Augusto Fernandez and the two Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders Brad Binder and Jack Miller.
And speaking of the orange squad, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaro said in a video the team posted on social media that he feels “very good” on the bike after a winter of training sees the Test Rider come into 2024 in a much better physical condition. Espargaro also comments on how well Acosta is adapting to the bike.
Aero game stepped up ahead of Sepang Test
As we saw across the previous two days of Shakedown action, the factories have ramped up the aerodynamics game in 2024. You can see KTM’s front fender wing, Aprilia’s ‘Batmobile’ rear wing and Ducati’s additional ground effect side panel fairing updates HERE, with the respective test riders running all of these additions on the final day. Honda’s upgraded ‘stegosaurus’ rear wing can be seen below.
Honda and Yamaha: all hands on deck
On Day 3, Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda LCR) was spotted testing a different swingarm, and Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) has confirmed that Honda’s 2023 bike isn’t in Sepang. Honda are focusing on the package they had at the Valencia Test and on a new prototype they’ve got. A “change in direction”.
Zarco was the fastest Honda on Saturday, ahead of Mir and then Luca Marini (Repsol Honda Team) and Nakagami, peppered throughout the top ten.
Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) finished the Shakedown in P4, while new teammate Alex Rins was a tenth off him in P7. In terms of novelties, Yamaha Test Rider Cal Crutchlow ventured out with a new, longer exhaust and an updated aero body.
More to come?
For Ducati and Aprilia, repped at the Shakedown by Michele Pirro and Lorenzo Savadori, respectively, there were the previously mentioned aero updates on obvious show, and the event saw plenty of prep for the rest of their riders to join the fray at the Sepang Test.
That will include reigning Champion Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) meeting his new steed ahead of another title defence campaign, and 2023 challenger Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing). It’s also another chance to see Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) heading out, although that’s not on a 2024-spec bike…
Meanwhile, alongside Maverick Viñales and Aleix Espargaro at Aprilia, there’s also a complete novelty of a different kind in the Noale camp as Trackhouse Racing prepare to land in MotoGP™, with Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez likely soon to appear in their new colours on track for the first time.
That’s a wrap on one of the most star-studded Shakedowns we’ve seen for some time. Next up it’s the official #SepangTest from the 6th to the 8th of February, where we’ll see everyone back out and back in business ahead of their assault on 2024.
BEST LAPS BY RIDER: DAY 3

Yamaha and Honda race riders join the fray on Friday in Sepang.
The Shakedown is hotting up! A host more riders joined the fray on Friday but it was still Red Bull KTM Factory Racing on top, this time thanks to test tider Pol Espargaro. He ended Day 2 of the Shakedown fastest with a 1:58.241, a lap time just under three tenths clear of Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™), taking part for the first time on Friday. Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) continued to impress, third quickest and just thousandths off 2021 Champion Quartararo.
After remaining on the sidelines for the opening day of Shakedown action, the Yamaha and Honda riders all allowed to take part thanks to the new concessions system – catch up on that HERE – headed out. Luca Marini (Repsol Honda Team) was the first rider on track, with teammate Joan Mir, Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) and Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda LCR) also in action. Likewise, Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) got stuck in, settling in to his new team.
Acosta continues to impress
It was another eye-catching day for MotoGP™’s sole 2024 rookie Acosta. The #31’s best time on Day 2 was a 1:58.531. For context, Brad Binder’s (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) quickest time at the 2023 Malaysian GP was a 1:58.080 (Q2), Augusto Fernandez’ (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) was a 1:58.107 (Q1) and Jack Miller’s (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was a 1:58.232 (PR).
The aero game continues
A new piece of front aero – more specifically a front fender wing – was spotted on Dani Pedrosa’s Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine on Day 2, while Aprilia Racing – with Lorenzo Savadori – continued to lap on the Noale factory’s new ‘Batmobile’ rear wing (below). Honda and Stefan Bradl have been busy testing an upgraded stegosaurus-looking rear wing too.
In the hands of Michele Pirro, Ducati’s main aero update that we’ve seen so far – teased by Gigi Dall’Igna at the 2024 team launch – comes on the side fairing. The addition of a further “ground effect” panel can be seen next to Ducati’s usual downwash duct, so it will be interesting to hear the comments of the riders on what effect this has.
Getting up to speed
For the full-time riders, most of the day was spent getting themselves back in the groove on a MotoGP™ bike after the winter break. Quartararo and Rins had three bikes – two ’23 spec and one ’24 spec – each, with Mir spending a lot of his time on the bike he used at the Valencia Test. The same can be said for Marini, with the Italian largely focusing on adapting to the RC213V.
A heavy rain shower meant dry running was cut short on Friday ahead of the final day of Shakedown testing on Saturday.

This weekend, Triumph is revving up to make motorsport history. On Saturday, February 3, the cutting-edge Triumph TF 250-X motocross bike will make its competitive debut at the Detroit round of AMA Supercross in the USA. The momentum doesn’t stop there, with the MX2 World Championship team lining up for their first gate-drop at the pre-season MX race in Talavera de la Reina, Spain, just one day later.
Lining up for Round 1 of the 250SX East category, riders Jalek Swoll (#33) and rookie Evan Ferry (#751) are excited to finally stop the testing and complete some race laps aboard their new machines under the lights of the huge Ford Field stadium in Detroit; this weekend’s event will mark the first ever entry into Supercross competition for Triumph Racing. Having both had little race time during the previous season, the Triumph Racing riders are fired up and hungry for the challenge. The aim during the Supercross season is to improve week-by-week, gaining valuable feedback aboard the Triumph TF 250-X.
Over in Europe, the Monster Energy Triumph Racing duo of Mikkel Haarup and Camden McLellan, who are preparing to compete in the FIM MX2 World Championship this season, will enjoy their first gate-drop with the Triumph TF 250-X at the first round of the Spanish Championship. Regarded as one of the pre-season ‘warm-up’ races with a host of Grand Prix riders in attendance, the event allows the team to gauge their preparations ahead of the first FIM Motocross World Championship event in Argentina in early March.
Motocross is a completely new segment for the British brand and 2024 represents a historic year with the launch of the Triumph TF 250-X and a fully committed racing programme on demanding dirt. In less than two years after announcing its intentions to build, sell, and race a motocross bike, Triumph has created a dedicated programme operating on both sides of the Atlantic and boasting some of the most successful names in the sport to bring it to the pinnacle.
The OEM bike, available in dealers soon, will enter the heat of the battle in the SuperMotocross World championship incorporating the AMA Supercross Championship and the AMA Pro Motocross Series in the 250 categories. With the homologation ruling in place for the US-based series, it means the majority of components on the race bikes have to be those sold on the mass market; although both series naturally require the OEM product to be at the absolute highest level, making it the toughest yet most ideal development ground for Triumph’s off-road lineup.
“This weekend marks a historic moment for Triumph. Our brand-new TF 250-X will be making its debut in the first round of the East Coast 250 SuperMotocross World Championship, while our MX2 team will be competing in their first pre-season race in Spain.
“Seeing this bike on the start line, will be the culmination of years of hard work from both our world class engineering teams, and our racing teams, who have all shared the same passion and ambition to develop the bike into a competitive package.
“Our athletes have all adapted to the bike quickly, enabling them to be laser-focused in their race preparations, and we are all excited to see what Camden, Evan, Jalek and Mikkel can do with the bike, in the heat of competition.
“This is an important milestone for our Triumph Racing programme, which has expanded enormously for 2024, both on and off road. Building on our rich racing history and our success as the official engine supplier to Moto2, this season is going to see us in more competitions than ever before. We can’t wait to see what the year will hold for Triumph.”
Bobby Hewitt – Triumph Racing Team Principal (US):
“Right now, I’m feeling very calm and confident about the team, the riders, our bike, and I try not to think too much about the significance of what Saturday means to me, but more importantly, what it means for Triumph Motorcycles. We, just like every other team, have been working 24/7 making sure we have everything we need before the race rig leaves for Detroit, although I don’t think many people truly understand the countless hours of dedication, sacrifice, and commitment that is required to get to this point.
“I’m very grateful for all the hard work and long hours Triumph and the team have been putting in, to make sure we are prepared to go racing. For all of those involved in this project, February 3rd, 2024 will mean so much more than having the opportunity to watch a professional supercross race. To each of them, including myself, it will be a day in history, that none of us will ever forget
“I’ve been very happy with how our bike development has gone thus far, I’m sure we will continue to make improvements to the Triumph TF 250-X as the season goes along. Going into this first race, the message, and expectations I have set are very simple: for everyone to be the best they can be on Saturday and then let’s work our ass off during the week to be better the following Saturday. It’s a new team, new bike and new program, and our goal is to improve week-upon-week with our riders. If we do that, everything else will fall into place.”
Jalek Swoll (#33)
“We are finally here! It’s been a long preparation and a lot of hard work from everyone, but I’ve been putting in the work with Mike Brown on my riding and we’ve been fine tuning the bike to be comfortable.
“To be on a brand new bike and be one of the first to race it is super exciting. My expectations are to be up there and fighting and if we leave with a top five on Saturday, I’ll be happy and we can build the rest of the season from there.”
Evan Ferry (#751)
“I am really excited to get behind the gate in my first ever supercross race. It will become a dream come true to line up with the best in the world, and with a brand like Triumph it will be the cherry on top knowing that I was one of the first people to drop the gate on the bike.
“The preparation has gone well. I think as a rookie on a new bike in a new team you always wish you could have had more time, but we have left no stone unturned and no minute unused. There isn’t a whole lot of expectation for me, just doing all the laps and staying healthy. We plan on getting just a little better at each race and hopefully be there by the end of the year.”
After the nine-round 250SX East series finishes, the team will be boosted by Joey Savatgy joining the line-up to tackle the AMA Pro Motocross 250 series starting May 25 at Fox Raceway, California, alongside Swoll and Ferry. For the 2025 season Triumph will additionally field its new 450cc bike in the SuperMotocross World Championship.
Factory test riders and 2024 rookie Acosta head out on track at Sepang.
MotoGP™ is officially underway for 2024! Day 1 of the #SepangShakedown concluded with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing test rider Dani Pedrosa on top, with the three-time World Champion putting in a best lap of 1:59.233. Right on his tail comes Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), the only rookie in 2024, just 0.152s behind as his impressive performances only continue to fuel the hype around his arrival into MotoGP™.
The Shakedown allows factory test riders and rookies to take to the track, as well as those granted unlimited testing by the new concession system that came into force at the conclusion of 2023. As it stands that’s Yamaha and Honda. On Day 1 of the Shakedown, however, we didn’t yet see any of the “race” riders who are able to take part thanks to the concessions, so there was no 2021 Champion Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) nor new teammate Alex Rins, and no Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team), his new teammate Luca Marini, nor fellow Honda riders Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) and Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU LCR). Yet.
That meant a total of seven riders in action on Thursday, although those who can take part are expected on track at some point before action concludes. Pedrosa and rookie Acosta were joined by fellow RC16 rider Pol Espargaro, who begins his new role as a Test Rider for KTM, and Michele Pirro (Ducati Lenovo Team), Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha Factory Racing), and Stefan Bradl (HRC Test Team) were all on track for their respective factories.
In terms of innovations spotted so far, Aprilia, Ducati, KTM and Honda all had new aero to test, with the rear tail unit aero a particular talking point with all the aforementioned manufacturers. Pol Espargaro and Pedrosa were testing KTM’s newest aero package, with Bradl and Pirro doing the work for Honda and Ducati, respectively.
Acosta, despite it being only his second day on a MotoGP™ machine, was testing a couple of things on his RC16 as the reigning Moto2™ World Champion did some work with an innovative front mudguard, as well as testing out both the steel and carbon chassis.
Plenty more is to come over the next two days of Shakedown action before the Official Test kicks off on Tuesday the 6th of February, so stay tuned for more!

Suzuki Italy has revealed a special edition of its popular V-Strom model, featuring Dunlop Trailmax Raid tyres as part of a package of adventure-focused upgrades that evoke memories of Suzuki’s historic off-road prowess.
The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Djebel was revealed at the Motor Bike Expo in Verona, Italy, earlier this month, and is characterised by graphics reminiscent of the brand’s enduro models of the 80s and 90s, and the DR-Z which raced in several editions of the Dakar rally.
A key technical upgrade is the selection of Dunlop Trailmax Raid tires for the 21 and 17-inch rims. Dunlop’s 50/50 on/off-road tyre was revealed last year and is designed for riders who require confidence-inspiring off-road performance without compromising on wet and dry on-road traction. Furthermore, the tyre’s rally raid-inspired design offers a more ‘off-road ready’ style than the Trailmax Mixtour tires available on the standard V-Strom 800DE model.
Marco Quaglino, Sales Manager Moto & Marine, Suzuki Italy: “We wanted to further emphasise the off-road soul of the V-Strom 800DE Djebel by preparing it so that it would be ready to tackle any road. The choice of tyres fell on Dunlop Trailmax Raid, which provide excellent performance both off-road and on asphalt, offering high versatility to customers.”
In the last 12 months, Trailmax Raid has become a key product in the trail and adventure tire market, increasing Dunlop’s offering to the segment alongside other key tyres, including Trailmax Meridian for 90% on-road adventure touring use, the Mutant crossover tire with its excellent wet weather performance and Trailmax Mission for long-distance adventure riding in tough terrains.
They sit alongside more products, such as Trailmax Mixtour and D908RR, which together combine to create Dunlop’s most comprehensive trail offering yet.
Roberto Finetti, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Motorcycle Europe: “It is exciting to see Dunlop Trailmax Raid chosen as a key upgrade to the special edition V-Strom 800DE Djebel. Not only does Trailmax Raid provide on and off-road performance worthy of this heritage edition bike, but it has been designed to look the part on adventure-focused models like this, too.
“Since launching Trialmax Raid a year ago, we have been pleased with its reception in the market, helping to solidify Dunlop’s stronger than ever trail/adventure range, following the introduction of Trailmax Meridian, Trailmax Mission and Mutant to offer wide-ranging options that suit all types of adventure riders.”

SUPERTECH R10 HELMET TECHNICAL FEATURES OUTER SHELL CARBON SHELL CONSTRUCTION MULTI-LAYER COMPOSITE DISPERSES ENERGY IN IMPACTS
Homologated to ECE 22.06, DOT, and FIM standards, the Supertech R10’s shell construction utilizes a highly advanced molding technology with a multi-composite combination featuring a 3K high-density carbon outer layer, a uni-directional carbon composite layer, an aramid fiber layer, and a fiberglass layer.
The 3K high-density carbon outer layer provides excellent strength and efficiency of energy dissipation over the shell. The uni-directional (UD) carbon composite layer provides significantly greater radial strength around the shell, preventing compression, but allowing controlled deflection for reducing transmitted impact energy, while the aramid fiber plus fiberglass layers provide critical penetration protection.
This layered composite combination created by bonding everything together with an advanced epoxy resin already applied on the pre-preg fiber, perfectly controls the ideal proportion of resin versus fiber to maximize strength, mechanical performance, and lightweight. The combination of material layers provides improved energy management, as well as limited outer shell deflection, making the energy spread wider and better absorbed by the EPS liner.
The S-R10’s unique shell construction results in extremely effective impact protection. With a fully equipped in-house helmet testing facility within Alpinestars’ state-of-the-art Research and Development center, the company has carried out an exhaustive impact research program, where research and development efforts have shown the S-R10 helmet returning linear and oblique impact performance results which far exceed current ECE 22.06 helmet regulation standard limits. For direct linear impacts, which are impacts at a 90-degree angle between the helmet and an object, the S-R10 surpasses the standard by an average magnitude of 37%. And for rotational acceleration and oblique impact performance, where impact energy comes from an angle other than a linear 90-degree, or right-angle straight impact, the S-R10 exceeds the standard by 65%.
INNER SHELL THE S-R10’S INNER SHELL IS MADE FROM EPS IN DIFFERENT DENSITIES
The S-R10 Helmet has four inner shells just like the outer shell, and is available in four anatomical sizes. The S-R10’s construction is optimized to ensure riders have the correct fit, which not only improves comfort and reduces overall weight but most importantly, improves the effectiveness of the helmet in an impact. Underneath the helmet’s outer shell is an eight-piece multi-density EPS liner, with six specific densities that are strategically positioned in different zones to ensure excellent energy absorption from impact forces dissipated over the outer shell, as well as a close and comfortable fit. The EPS liner, just like the outer shell, has its own unique dimension for each helmet size, further tailoring the helmet’s performance and fit when it comes to protection and comfort.
LINEAR AND OBLIQUE FORCE MANAGEMENT
The EPS inner surface is smooth, creating an optimized, low-friction area, for superior oblique impact management. When it comes to other types of helmet testing, the best helmets are those that provide protection against rotational, as well as oblique and linear impact forces.
To help fight and mitigate those rotational, oblique, and linear impact forces, Alpinestars has designed a low-friction surface on the inner surface of the EPS liner. The inner surface is polished to be incredibly smooth, and then specially coated to reduce friction even further, allowing the comfort liner to move against the EPS. The result is increased rotational and oblique and linear force management, allowing the rider’s head to move independently inside of the helmet, or vice-versa, which can significantly reduce the amount of force transmitted to the head, neck, brain, and spine from an oblique impact, while simultaneously reducing the possibility of a concussion. To recap, specific rotational impact protection is provided by the combination of the internal shape and the specific coating of the EPS liner, coupled with the specially developed surface in the comfort liner. This patented technology reduces rotational acceleration transmitted to the rider’s head.
A-HEAD FITMENT SYSTEM AND CUSTOMIZED FIT
Adding to the personalization and custom, tailor-made fit of the S-R10, is the helmet’s unique and patented A-Head Fitment System. The A-Head System allows the helmet to be tuned exactly to the rider’s preference by having the ability to adjust both the height and angle at which the helmet sits on the head. The EPS is fitted with the A-Head Fitment System that allows for an ultra-specific setup that can be adapted to how deep the rider’s head sits in the helmet, as well as how far forward or backward the helmet is tilted.
To provide riders with the ability to further tailor the SR10’s fit to better suit a wide variety of different head shapes and sizes, Alpinestars is offering a variety of spare parts in a vast range of sizes giving motorcyclists the ability to change and swap out the cheek pads, crown pad, and top pad with a selection of both thinner and thicker options, to truly customize the helmet’s comfort for a perfect fit. With the S-R10’s various inner comfort liner options, plus the unique and patented A-Head Fitment System, there are virtually countless inner fitment configurations to meet the fit and performance needs of all riders.
AERODYNAMICS DEVELOPED WITH CFD SIMULATIONS, VALIDATED IN THE WIND TUNNEL AND ON TRACK, THE S-R10 HELMET IS OPTIMIZED FOR LOW DRAG PERFORMANCE AND MAXIMUM AERODYNAMIC STABILITY
Designed and developed for professional MotoGP athletes where going faster and being protected is the goal. By minimizing drag and ensuring optimal aerodynamic stability, air management outside and inside of the helmet, and a comfortable, customizable fit, the S-R10 Helmet ensures the overall experience in racing and sport riding is fit for champions.
The S-R10 has been developed in the full-scale wind tunnel since the beginning of its development. Aerodynamic targets for the coefficient of drag in different head positions, as well as stability at different angles were a primary goal in the helmet shape development, first extensively developed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), then validated in the full-scale wind tunnel, and finally on track. The result is a helmet that achieves the lowest level of drag, and the highest level of aerodynamic stability at high speed compared to any other race helmet that we have tested in the wind gallery. This has made the S-R10 already the helmet of choice by factory MotoGP teams for its top aerodynamic performance. Road riders will likely benefit from this too, with reduced strain on their necks at high speed and low levels of wind noise.
The S-R10 Helmet’s aerodynamic spoilers are fitted with an Alpinestars patented release system, with elastic joints that help the spoiler detach from the helmet shell if it is subjected to a significant impact, no matter what the angle, to reduce potential rotational energy.
The helmet also comes with lateral winglets to further support the S-R10’s stability and improve aerodynamic drag. In addition, the helmet visor has turbulators to improve aero-acoustic performance. As a result, compared to the aerodynamic performance of the helmet fitted with the standard road spoiler, the S-R10 itself is already the top-performing, aerodynamic helmet we have tested, and with the configuration of the race spoiler and the aero winglets together, Alpinestars Helmet Development team have achieved a reduction in drag for the helmet of an additional 4.54%.
VENTILATION THE SUPERTECH R10 HELMET CONTAINS ELEVEN VENTILATION POINTS
When it comes to ventilation and breathability, there are 11 ventilation ports, not including the eyeport, with 7 intakes including 3 in the chinguard and 4 on the top of the helmet, plus 4 exhausts, with 2 lateral ports on the chin bar, and 2 on the top rear of the helmet. These ventilation ports integrate directly with the helmet’s shell with a series of air ducts through the inner EPS liner. With the S-R10, airflow comes in through the ports, as well as actively circulates over and around the rider’s head through a series of channels, and then gets extracted out the back of the helmet.
The Top Vent features a large central slider that channels air down to the top of the head for better comfort, which when open, has vents for hot air extraction from the rider’s forehead. Under the rear spoiler, there are two extractor vents for effective hot air exhausting. The Chin Vents are formed by two openings located at the front of the helmet at the sides of the shield lock mechanism, where each flap has a tab in the corner, which is used to open or close the vent. Air entering from this point is channeled towards the inner side of the shields, creating a laminated flow of air that effectively prevents fogging and misting. In addition, the Chin Bar Vents are used to extract humid air to the outside of the helmet.
SHIELD FEATURES THE SHIELD IS DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM VISION: 220° OF LATERAL VISION AND 57° OF VERTICAL VISION
The shield mechanism is fitted with metal lock levers to to prevent unwanted shield detachment during impacts and/or crashes, which are locked in the closed position by a front metal hook. The cinematic movement is engineered to perfectly seal the visor against the shell’s rubber window trim. The shield is engineered with an impressive wide lowered eyeport on the sides for enhanced peripheral vision, offering 220-degrees of lateral and 57-degrees of vertical visibility and providing a maximized field of view in the riding position and providing great rider comfort.
Additionally, the visor itself can be easily changed or removed thanks to its secure and toolless quick-release system. The S-R10 is fitted with an ECE 22.06 Homologated Optical Class 1 Shield, 3mm in thickness, and coated with an anti-scratch and anti-fog treatment. The shield is equipped with internal pins to accommodate a Pinlock® 120XLT – 100 % MaxVisionTM lens and external pins to accommodate tear-offs.
REMOVABLE PREMIUM LINING REMOVABLE AND WASHABLE, FEATURING FABRICS WITH ANTI-MICROBIAL TREATMENTS
The S-R10 has eight individual internal parts consisting of the crown pad, top pad, cheek pads, chin curtain, chin strap, ear pads, wind deflector, and breath deflector.
Crown Pad: The crown pad and the neck pad are elastically connected, for enhanced oblique impact management and interface with the smooth surface of the inner EPS liner. The crown pad’s construction is based on four panels (front, sides, rear), for an optimized fit with the proper foam thickness.
Top Pad: The top pad is removable and height adjustable via the A-Head Fitment System.
Cheek Pads: The cheek pads are fitted with premium, 3D foam, and fabrics, offering comfort and breathability. The cheek pads feature an ERS emergency extraction system, allowing the side cheek padding to be easily removed by trained medical professionals and they also have a channel for the installation of a hydration hose.
Chin Curtain: A chin curtain is available inside the box to provide further protection against air entering the helmet from below.
Ear Pads: Ear pads are fixed under each cheek pad and help to improve comfort by reducing the aerodynamic noise, they are removable allowing for the installation of a communication system in the helmet.
Wind and Breath Deflectors: The wind and breath deflectors are included to improve aerodynamic behavior and humid air flow, respectively.
CHIN BAR PROFILE
Another outer shell design protection feature is the chin bar’s profile, where the base area has been specifically sculpted to give a relief section. The bottom profile is raised to clear the collarbone, and instead of the hard carbon shell coming into potential contact with the collarbone, the S-R10 has a softer EPP (expanded Polypropylene) liner which extends beyond the helmet shell itself and is covered by a more flexible rubber compound. This chin bar design provides a reduced chance of any sort of collarbone injury, one of the more common injuries in motorcycling.
WEIGHT
And finally, when it comes to weight, the ECE / DOT / FIM certified Supertech R10 helmet tips the scales at an impressive 1,540 grams for a size medium, or 3.4 pounds, providing the S-R10 with an extremely high performance to protection to weight ratio.

Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) showcased impressive form on Day 1 at Portimao, maintaining his momentum from the Jerez test last week. The Ducati rider clocked an impressive 1’39.932, securing the top spot. In pursuit, Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was second, just 0.094s behind Bulega. Yamaha riders made their mark, with Jonathan Rea (Pata Yamaha Prometeon) claiming P3, narrowing the gap to Bulega to 0.148s. Teammate Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon) secured P5, while Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team)claimed P4.
Reigning WorldSBK Champion Alvaro Bautista(Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), finished three-quarters of a second off the pace in eighth. Although an improvement from his position in Jerez (P16), he appears to be grappling with both a lingering neck injury and the challenge of adapting to the ballast imposed on his bike to comply with the new combined weight rules.
Outside the top five, Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) secured sixth place, focusing on adjustments for ergonomics at the new circuit. Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) finished a solid day in seventh, refining the base bike and experimenting with different swingarms. Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) secured P9 and P10, respectively, both within one second of Bulega‘s time. Just behind them, Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) was back in action after missing Jerez
Further down the field, Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) faced challenges in 13th, indicating a need for more time to adapt to the new Honda bike. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Motocorsa Racing) and Scott Redding (Bonovo Action BMW) finished 14th and 15th, while Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) grappled with new-seat and swingarm parts, was 16th. Andrea Iannone (Team GoEleven) focused on bike geometry and setting refinement. Tito Rabat (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) stayed competitive, just 1.571s behind Bulega.
In WorldSSP, Adrian Huertas (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) claimed the top spot with a 1’43.806.
Nicolo Bulega | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“Very good first day. I was a bit worried before starting this morning, this track is very difficult with this bike. It was difficult to be fast, so I’m really happy about the time today. This track is one of the most difficult this season and I needed to adapt a little bit because it’s really different from Supersport. My pace was good in the end, so I’m happy about today. We focused on braking because there is a lot of hard braking here, and we need to improve in that area. During the day, we were able to improve, and we know in which direction to work tomorrow. We’re already doing a great job, and I want to continue this way.”
Portimao Test Day 1 Results:
1. Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) 1’39.913 – 82 laps

Further the factory feeling by kitting out 2023 and 2024 KTM SX-FS with the Connectivity Unit Offroad.
Expand the possibilities of KTM’s class-leading dirt bike technology by retrofitting the Connectivity Unit Offroad (CUO) to all KTM SX-F motorcycles from 2023 and 2024 model year to revel in that special ‘factory’ treatment. After the success and positive reaction to the recent launch of the 2024 KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, KTM has now made the CUO obtainable as a KTM PowerParts addition for KTM SX-F models across the 2023 and 2024 collections.
The CUO was one of the main features of the 2024 FACTORY EDITIONs and a result of the bikes being raced in 2024 AMA Supercross and Motocross. Thanks to easy-to-install, highly durable hardware and the options contained through the free KTMConnect App, the CUO is the doorway to next-level riding.
The advantages are three-fold: simplistic engine management and suspension set-up, and full in depth analysis through the RIDER section of the KTMConnect App. The CUO is a two-part system mounted between the right fork leg and the GPS component on the redesigned front fender. Racers and users can now activate a series of wireless connectivity functions to fully customise their KTM for a variety of track conditions, and also dissect and improve their own on-track efforts.
When it comes to KTM SX-F motors, riders can opt for PRIME (toggling levels of Traction Control) or ADVANCED settings (engine braking, throttle response, traction control and launch control), as well as engaging the Quickshifter. There are also presets for specific terrain with SAND, GRAVEL, HARD PACK, DRY and WET parameters.
Selecting the SAG ASSISTANT or SUSPENSION SETTINGS tabs on KTMConnect gives recommendations and suggestions, allowing further personalisation based on weight and skill set, as well as the type of track or weather conditions.
RIDER* harnesses the potential of the CUO thanks to a beneficial alliance with analysis experts LitPro. RIDER not only breaks down the motorcycle’s data used lap-by-lap but also gives concise information on each session: in effect a ‘virtual coach’. Based around data collected from speed, acceleration, deceleration, average speed, g-force, air-time, jump height, gearing, RPM, throttle position, water temperature, traction control, maps switch mode and more, calculations are made to show a rider’s trajectory and analytics to perfect the ideal course and batter the chrono. After the moto, riders can also share their recordings and widen their community moto experience. Attach a heart rate monitor and RIDER goes even more in-depth.
Shave those lap-times, hone that technique and bask in the full-throttle prospects of the KTM SX-F family with the KTM Connectivity Unit Offroad add-on, available for £216.60. Available from February 2024 at Authorised KTM Dealers.
For more information on the Connectivity Unit Offroad (CUO) click HERE.
*An annual subscription to RIDER through KTMConnect is available for only £59.99 and sourced easily from Apple’s App store and Google Play.

Akrapovič’s latest addition to its range of exhausts for BMW Motorrad motorcycles is a completely new system for the all-new BMW R 1300 GS.
This new Slip-On Line (Titanium) exhaust has been developed exclusively for the BMW R 1300 GS and encompasses the extensive understanding that Akrapovič has acquired from years of experience working with the BMW GS range and its boxer engines. This knowledge dates back to the first exhaust system that was developed for the 1999 BMW R 1150 GS, and it has been built upon through the subsequent editions of this iconic BMW series since then.
The double-flow muffler is constructed from lightweight titanium with a handmade carbon-fibre end cap, resulting in a weight saving of 9.3% over the standard stock version. It has been created for improved performance and enhanced sound silencing, which mitigates the impact on the environment while delivering a deep, full sound. An all-new special profiled surface on the muffler adds strength and durability, and an engraved Akrapovič logo creates a quality finish that is pleasing on the eye. This Akrapovič exhaust system will also be available in a black version as an alternative to the titanium finish, giving customers a choice for their motorcycle.
Performance is an important attribute of the Slip-On Line (Titanium), with power and torque increases of 1.4 kW (1.9 hp) at 7,600 rpm and 4.5 Nm at 2,300 rpm, respectively. These figures were obtained in back-to-back runs on the Akrapovič dyno against a BMW R 1300 GS using a standard stock exhaust. With EC/ECE type approval, the exhaust is a simple plug-and-play installation with no remapping required. Once installed, the system is fully compatible with BMW Motorrad’s side cases.
To complement the launch of this new exhaust system, Akrapovič has released a video of the Slip-On Line (Titanium) Exhaust for the BMW R 1300 GS that can be viewed below:
The ultimate battery charger and maintainer for the latest generation 12V lead-acid and lithium batteries.
OptiMate 4 Quad Program is the ultimate battery charger for the high technology 12V lead-acid or lithium battery, typically found in adventure, touring, cruiser and performance motorcycles. Also suitable for quads, side-by-side off-roaders and personal watercraft, it is the world’s most advanced powersport battery charger.
Without a proper battery care routine, running a bike like BMW’s new R1300 GS can quickly become a costly pursuit – a genuine BMW replacement lithium battery can set you back over £250.
Add on accessories, like on-bike device charging, auxiliary lights and heated grips, which put additional demands on both battery and charging system, and it’s never been more important to invest in a quality battery charger/maintainer.
Works with all types of batteries
Both batteries and motorcycle electrical systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated and sensitive, which makes choosing the right charger tricky – using the wrong one can cause more harm than good.
The OptiMate 4 Quad Program is the perfect solution for owners any motorcycle with a 12V system and is particularly useful for those with more than one bike to look after, because you can select the type of battery that is fitted.
A one-stop solution to battery care, it is a 9-step 1.25A charger and maintainer that can be connected to all 12V STD, AGM and GEL lead-acid and LiFePO4 or LFP Lithium batteries.
Super simple to operate, the user can toggle between main modes at the push of a button, then just leave the OptiMate 4 Quad Program to do its thing automatically.
Gold standard charging and maintenance
Part of OptiMate’s premium Gold Series, the Quad Program will test, assess, monitor and maintain the battery within its safe range, without the need for user input. It automatically adjusts current to match battery size and condition, and will also diagnose battery health, warning when damage is detected. The fully automatic multi-step programme brings it safely to full charge: just select from one of the four programmes:
Lead-acid direct-to-battery
Lead-acid via BMW CAN-Bus accessory socket
Lithium direct-to-battery
Lithium via BMW CAN-Bus accessory socket
OptiMate 4 Quad Program does the rest; no supervision needed.
For long-term use, connect the battery lead directly onto the terminals, and the charger will keep a battery in peak condition and extend its working life. It can also recover a ‘dead’ unit from as low as 0.5V, (most batteries appear ‘flat’ when they drop to 9V and are almost impossible to recover from below 2V).
CAN bus compatible
The Quad programming allows for charging directly to the battery, or through a live (‘hot’) 12V socket, using the optional OptiMate connector. It’s also fully set up to work with the CAN-bus controlled 12V DIN sockets found on many modern BMWs.
It features Automatic Keyless Activation and the built-in BMS (Battery Management System) reset function reactivates Lithium batteries from sleep or deep discharge protection mode, ready to accept a charge.
When the battery is at optimum charge level, the Quad Program switches to continued 24/7 long-term maintenance mode, to keep the battery in peak health.
Energy-saving technology built-in
Completely safe for long-term ‘connect-and-forget’ use, the OptiMate 4 Quad Program comes with full electronic protection, to prevent overcharging or damage to sensitive vehicle electronics.
It has Energy Saving Technology to minimise electricity use (stand-by power is less than 0.5W) and is rated for use down to -40°C. It also features a weatherproof casing, so can be used outside.
The standard OptiMate 4 Quad Program retails at just £83.90 including VAT – much less than a replacement battery – and comes with a 3-year warranty for peace of mind. For charging BMWs using the accessory socket, choose the OptiMate 4 Quad Program Premium which at £95.90 includes the required connector lead.

Get on the GAS for 2024 with wings, extra promise, and a lot of excitement! Augusto Fernandez, Pedro Acosta and Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 accelerate the changes for the forthcoming season.
Don’t miss our super-cool 2024 Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 introduction where the youngest and wildest line-up on the MotoGP grid usher in the second season of Grand Prix action!
First-up, official pre-season tests in Malaysia and Qatar but then there is tonnes of anticipation for the fresh world championship campaign, that will launch with the Grand Prix of Qatar at the Lusail International Circuit on March 9-10. The dash under the lights will be the first of 22 rounds and 44 outings (2024 will be the second term of the Saturday Sprint format) across the globe and into the month of November.
Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 are strapped and eager for the red lights to go out thanks to their vibrant rider roster. 2022 Moto2™ World Champion and 2023 MotoGP Rookie of the Year Augusto Fernandez will tackle his sophomore attempt at the premier class with the GASGAS RC16 and will be aiming to better a ‘PB’ race result of 4th from 2023 as well as enter the top ten of the championship standings. The 26-year-old is, of course, joined by fellow Spaniard and reigning Moto2 #1 Pedro Acosta. The 19-year-old already has Moto3 and Moto2 titles in just three years of GP competition and comes to the MotoGP fray with deserved hype and expectation. 2024 will be his first taste of the demands and technical complexities of MotoGP and the initial step of what could be a truly spectacular career.
Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 is again led by Nicolas Goyon, for the second season in a row, and with excellent back up from the likes of Pol Espargaro in a test rider and supporting role and the team’s loyal band of partners and suppliers.
Augusto Fernandez: “Everything was new and there was a lot to learn last year but there were points towards the end of the season where I felt fast and like I had the speed. I felt comfortable riding the bike but as a rookie you had to be very patient and trust the process. When I finished 2023 I analyzed the season and saw I had made the steps I needed to take. I am looking forward to this year because I now have the references of each track with the GASGAS RC16 and I know on Fridays we need to put a lot of input because it can decide much of the weekend. I’m super-proud to be partnering with Red Bull, and to have them on the bike. It’s a dream and we have everything we need to perform. It’s in our hands so let’s go for it.”
Pedro Acosta: “If I think about my career and journey so far then it is quite nice! Nice to say I had the opportunity to ride for a factory team in my first season, nice to say I won two titles in three years, it is nice to say I come into a factory team for the first season in MotoGP. But it is also quite tough to play with the pressure, to play with the comments. I don’t want to think about results at the moment. I just have one day on the bike, and it is not the time to talk about results or targets because it is not realistic. I will try to enjoy the Malaysia test and try to get as much experience as I can to try and be competitive at the beginning of the season but during that we also need to take race experience to grow step-by-step.”
Nicolas Goyon, Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 Team Manager: “In 2023 we had a lot of changes. We had this new Sprint format, and the new team structure but this means we are set and ready for the coming season. Augusto was strong for his rookie season. Of course, we all expect him to improve for 2024.He is very calm! He always takes some time to think about what has happened on the track and then to explain the technique and his feelings. This is something super-important for the team to develop and set-up the bike. Pedro is a great talent but my message for the fans would be ‘be patient’. You know, it is not so easy for a rookie to perform. It is complicated now with ride-height devices and a lot of electronics. The format of the weekend is also complicated and something to learn. Let’s give him time. For me, the 2024 Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 line-up will be even closer to the fans. Both riders are young, and we know this is the main target for GASGAS, to connect and excite all those that watch MotoGP.”
Hervé Poncharal, Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 Team Principal: “One of the very exciting things that has happened this winter is the return of Red Bull with Tech3, and we are extremely happy to have them again featuring on our MotoGP™ bike. This season will be more exciting than ever, with a very competitive grid: riders and technical packages are so close to each other, so I truly believe that we are set for an amazing show. Augusto Fernandez learnt a lot last year, and he is ready to perform and fight for top positions. One of the most exciting prospects that MotoGP™ has known in recent years, Pedro Acosta, will line up for us. His first day at the Valencia test gave us the insurance that he has everything to have a brilliant rookie season, and we are looking forward to heading to Sepang to kick things off!”
Pit Beirer, GASGAS Motorsport Director: “2023 was a very intense year for our first season with GASGAS on the grid but Augusto came in with a great approach – he is super-positive and a fighter – and gave us a highlight in Le Mans with his 4th position. I feel the team adapted really well over the whole season and I’m looking forward to seeing what Augusto can do in his second go. With Pedro I think the whole paddock and community agrees that there is a diamond coming up in this sport. He is a very special rider, a unique rider who has already broken so many records at a young age.Pedro will make us better and stronger for the future, so we are happy to have him. I feel GASGAS is a very dynamic brand, and looking to the team spirit with these two fantastic athletes it is definitely the one to watch out for in ’24.”
Hubert Trunkenpolz, Member of the Board, Pierer Mobility AG: “One of the reasons why we went with GASGAS into MotoGP was to create brand awareness and it worked perfectly. MotoGP is, by far, the biggest and most successful platform because the media value and the public attendance is immense and we are absolutely happy we made that move. We now have a very exciting combination of Augusto and Pedro and a motorcycle that has proven it is ready for trophies. We know it will be a long season and the Sprints have been challenging: the really positive thing is that the fans really appreciate [the Sprints], the action on Saturday, and frankly speaking I also like it. At the end of the day the guys are racers. It’s great to have Red Bull onboard this year and I think the 2024 livery looks fantastic.”
The new year is well underway and as the vision of a fitter, healthier 2024 looms, wheel spin away those January blues and add skid turns and stand-up wheelies to the new year’s resolutions list. It’s going to be another good year in orange, and the team and I are excited to get ready to race once again!”
Eight of the sport’s top under-21 teams will compete over an epic 28 heats for the FIM Speedway of Nations – SoN2 title in Manchester on Friday, July 12.
The FIM Team Speedway Under-21 World Championship is staged as part of the FIM Speedway of Nations – the sport’s world team championship for 2024, which takes place at Britain’s National Speedway Stadium from July 9-13.
While the FIM SoN was replaced on the 2023 calendar by the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup, SoN2 was still raced in Riga on August 11 as Poland blazed to an incredible 10th straight gold medal and their 16th overall.
Great Britain was due to sit out the 2024 event after finishing seventh in Riga. But after being seeded into the competition as host nation, they will now join an eight-team field, expanded from seven in 2023, featuring Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Australia, Germany, Czech Republic and the returning Swedish team, which missed the 2023 competition after finishing seventh in 2022.
With 28 heats and the sport’s under-21 world team crown on the line, René Schäfer, FIM race director for SoN2, is expecting a dramatic night of action in Manchester.
He said: “We looked at all the different options. With this being an under-21 event, the SoN2 riders are the future of our sport, and we felt the right decision was to find a way to allow every team to race and give these riders the valuable experience of an FIM Speedway World Championships event.
“There will be no Semi-Final or Final to decide the champions. Every team will race against the other seven nations. The highest-scoring team at the end of it will be the world under-21 team champions, and we look forward to seeing who comes out on top.”
The FIM has confirmed the FIM Speedway of Nations world rankings ahead of the 2024 tournament, which sees Australia defend the title they won at the last FIM SoN, staged at Danish venue Vojens in 2022.
The FIM SoN rankings correspond to the countries’ finishing positions in the 2022 competition, with the SoN2 rankings taken from the 2023 event in Riga.
For 2024, these three models are set to shake up the hard-fought mid-capacity sector, giving riders a choice of cruiser, naked, and Sportbike styles.
The aggressively styled Z500 is powered by a new twin-cylinder, water-cooled engine equipped with an Assist and Slipper clutch. The responsive power unit is housed in a lightweight trellis-type chassis delivering reassuring handling and easy reach to the ground for A2 licence holders.
Enjoying the same core trellis-type chassis and invigorating twin-cylinder, water-cooled engine as the Z, the Ninja 500 features the aggressive Ninja family look with angular upper cowl and a comprehensive performance styling package. It also meets European A2 licence regulations, widening its appeal across experienced riders with a desire for a narrow chassis and easy reach to the ground plus reassuring low speed manoeuvrability matched to genuine sporting performance.
Meanwhile, the new Eliminator has distinctive urban cruiser styling offering a comfortable and low seat plus a cruiser style 18” front and 16” rear wheel combination all relying on an all-new trellis type chassis with a 451cm3 Ninja based fuel-injected parallel twin engine at its core delivering strong low rev performance combined with lively upper rev range ability.
Prices for all three, including the SE versions of each have now been confirmed, offering an affordable entry into the Kawasaki family:
– Eliminator 500 – £5,999 – Eliminator 500 SE – £6,399 – Z500 – £5,699 – Z500 SE – £6,049 – Z500 – £5,999 – Ninja 500 SE – £6,499
Craig Watson, Sales and Marketing Manager at Kawasaki Motors UK:
“We understand the pressures many people are facing at the moment, which is why we’re pleased to be bringing these three models to the market with affordability in mind. Whether commuting, cruising, or exploring new roads, these three 500 models are the perfect partner.”
Following a year without Motorcycle Racing as part of the sporting calendar, Mondello Park and Motorcycling Ireland are delighted to announce the return of the Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship for 2024.
Ireland’s premier motorcycle racing series last ran in 2022, when it had its most successful season to date, with increased entries, record crowds and the closest finish ever witnessed in an Irish Superbike Championship. 2023 should have been the year for the series to build on this success, but due to insurance issues that opportunity has had to wait until 2024.
The series promoters, Mondello Park, remained prepared for the restart of racing throughout last year and consequently are primed to take up where they left off, with a repeat of the 2022 championship format. A seven weekend calendar is planned, beginning with the official championship test weekend in late March. The riders will then compete over six two-day events, one per month from April to September.
The return of Irish Motorcycle Racing has taken a lot of work behind the scenes by the new Motorcycling Ireland management committee and Mondello Park are grateful to them for all of their efforts. The recommencement of the sport will come at a cost however as the price of insurance cover has increased dramatically. A fund raising campaign is planned by Motorcycling Ireland, with the support of Mondello Park, with the aim of lessening the burden on competitors.
Further information regarding the 2024 Dunlop Masters will be communicated to competitors over the coming days and information will be available through the championships’ web site and social channels over the coming weeks.
JMA Racing Action Bike has made three new signings for the 2024 FIM Endurance World Championship, which revs up at Le Mans in France for the season-opening 24 Heures Motos from 18-21 April.
The France-based outfit has added Charles Cortot, Bram Lambrechts and Julien Lenoci to its Suzuki-powered attack. They join existing rider Matteo Giacomazzo, a new JMA recruit for the 2023 season.
Cortot raced for Slider Endurance in the 2023 FIM Endurance World Cup. Lambrechts joins the JMA on the back of winning the Belgian and Benelux Supersport titles last season. Lenoci is expected to perform a reserve rider role.
Jean-Marc Adam’s team explained:“Our first rider will be Charles Cortot, an experienced rider despite his young age. He knows Suzuki very well after joining the Junior Team and will bring us his experience.
“Our second pilot will be Matteo Giacomazzo who continues the adventure [with our team]. After a year of learning, Matteo knows the motorcycle, the circuits and the team. We really trust in Matteo, he will return it to us.
“Our third rider will be Belgian Bram Lambrechts. He has several seasons of experience in EWC and was the Belgian and Benelux Supersport champion in 2023. He will play for the front positions.
“Our fourth pilot will be Julien Lenoci, a professional firefighter with experience in the 24 Hours of Barcelona. Julien will be in charge of the testing and possibly participating in the races if necessary.

Elk Promotions’ season-opening Ardingly Classic Bike Show & Jumble set for Sunday 24th March 2024
Elk Promotions’ Ardingly Classic Bike Show & Jumble kick-starts their 2024 season on Sunday 24th March, at the usual South of England Showground venue.
Now in its 18th year, the March event at Ardingly marks the start of the riding season for many classic bike enthusiasts after the long, cold winter lay-up. The packed show once again promises a plethora of show bikes for inspiration, alongside a bike-only jumble and tons of trade stalls for those eager to finish off their winter projects.
The main Jubilee show hall will hold the highlight for many visitors once again this year, with a healthy number of privately-owned pre-1980 machines and club stands already signed-up for the show.
With almost two acres of show space available, most makes and models from motorcycling’s history will be represented. Last year’s prize winners included an eclectic mix of marques and models – including a 1915 Blackburne Scarlet Runner Replica and a 1966 Velocette Thruxton, right though to a 50cc Suzuki A50P Sports from 1977 – so eager show-goers can expect the same again.
The all-motorcycle autojumble and trade stands – offering new and used spares, accessories, clothing, tools and more – will fill up the remaining space inside the halls, with additional pitches outdoors.
For those looking to clear up space at home, Workshop Clear-Out’ stalls are available at the bargain price of just £20 per plot (pre-book only). The Free BikeMart display-to-sell area also returns, for those wishing to buy and sell complete machines.
As always, a range of caterers will also be on-hand to keep busy bargain hunters topped-up with food and drink throughout the day.
The South of England Showground can be found at Ardingly, near Gatwick, RH17 6TL – eight miles from M23 junction 10. For those riding in, there will be a Helmet Park in The Stockman’s Building.
Ticket prices have been frozen for the fourth year running, so adult tickets still cost just £7 and accompanied children under 16 are admitted free. Early Bird tickets are valid from 8am – two hours before general entry – and cost £10.
Tickets are available online or visitors can pay by card or cash at the gate. Advance tickets, stall bookings and all other info at www.elk-promotions.co.uk
FIM Speedway GP World Championship points up for grabs as SGP Sprint Races debut in Warsaw & Cardiff.
FIM Speedway Grand Prix riders will compete for up to four World Championship points as Qualifying Practice concludes with high-stakes sprint races at the sport’s flagship events in Warsaw and Cardiff.
The revolutionary format will debut at Qualifying Practice for the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw at PGE Narodowy at 17:00 CET on Friday, May 10 ahead of Saturday’s SGP event at 19:00 CET on May 11.
The second sprint race takes place at FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff Qualifying Practice at 15:00 UK time on Friday, August 16 ahead of Saturday’s Principality Stadium showdown at 17:00 UK time on August 17.
The new format sees 16 competing riders drawn into four groups of four and they will bid to set the fastest lap time over two blocks of two minutes, with all four riders in each group on track at the same time. The fastest rider in each quartet will secure their spot in the sprint race.
Raced over a conventional four-lap speedway heat, the sprint race sees the winner earn an additional four FIM Speedway GP World Championship points, with three for the rider in second, two for third and one for fourth place.
The sprint race winner will also earn first choice of starting positions for the following day’s Speedway GP, with the second, third and fourth placed riders selecting next. The remaining riders will then choose their starting positions in an order determined by the fastest time they set during Qualifying Practice, with the fastest rider who didn’t reach the sprint race choosing fifth and the 16th fastest rider selecting last.
Aside from the events in Warsaw and Cardiff, Qualifying Practice at the remaining Speedway GP events will be contested over the 2023 format, with all 16 riders ranked by their fastest lap time. As ever, the rider recording the fastest lap time earns first choice of starting positions.
Qualifying Practice at the other rounds will commence at the later time of 15:00 local time in 2024, with racing still getting underway at 19:00 local time.
As part of the FIM and global promoter Warner Bros. Discovery Sports’ vision to help the sport’s future stars take the next step on to the Speedway GP stage, SGP2 under-21 riders will now also compete in Qualifying Practice.
These sessions, which follow the same format as 2023 Speedway GP Qualifying Practice, take place ahead of the FIM SGP2 of Sweden – Malilla on June 14, the FIM SGP2 of Latvia – Riga on September 6 and the series-closing FIM SGP2 of Poland – Torun on September 27.
FIM Speedway Race Director Phil Morris can’t wait to see the sport’s biggest stars racing for a total of 10 Speedway GP World Championship points in each sprint race as Qualifying Practice concludes with a massive four laps in Warsaw and Cardiff.
He said: “We want to offer something more to fans watching in the stadiums and at home, and the sprint races give more meaning to Qualifying Practice.
“It will be a different session completely because it will be all about who can get their bike going the fastest. It will be about finding that speed over a lap initially and then the other test will be whether riders can switch on for that one race. Who can deal with that mental test?
“If they can and they win, it could earn them four World Championship points. There are 10 points available in that one race, so it could be hugely significant. It could make a difference in a rider becoming world champion or not. It could be the difference between them winning a medal or not, or it could make a difference to their chances of staying in the series for 2025.”
Morris believes drawing the 16 riders into groups of four will ensure everyone has a fair chance to make it into the sprint race, with the fastest rider from each quartet qualifying – not the fastest four riders overall.
He added: “Conditions will be the same for the four riders competing in the individual blocks. We believe this will be fairer than just putting the four fastest riders through to the sprint race. Otherwise, it could just be the four riders from the first block, for example, because the track surface often changes over the course of Qualifying Practice or a Speedway GP.
“With this format, you could end up with the top four in the World Championship drawn together in the same block, so it’s luck of the draw. You are not favouring anyone with this format.
“Once we have the four participants for the final, they will come and choose their starting positions. Here, the fastest of the four in Qualifying Practice will get first choice. Then it’s a one-off race with points on the line.”
After the chequered flag falls on the Friday sprint races, the SGP action follows on Saturday, with the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw on May 11 and the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff on August 17.
