Swifty Scooters, a leading British scooter manufacturer, is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking product that marks a significant milestone in British transportation history. Introducing the Swifty GO GT500, a revolutionary e-scooter that has received official approval for road use in the UK, setting a new standard in urban mobility.
Unlike traditional e-scooters, the Swifty GO GT500 has achieved certification as a Stand-On Moped within the L1e-B category by the DVSA, underscoring its compliance with stringent safety and regulatory standards. This distinction positions the Swifty GO GT500 as a pioneering force in the e-scooter industry, demonstrating a commitment to both innovation and safety.
With transport being the largest contributor to harmful emissions, and two-thirds of car journeys being less than 5 miles long, Swifty’s vehicles offer a clean, accessible and fun solution for urban and suburban travel.
“If we’re going to convince people to swap car journeys for micromobility, vehicles need to be safe to ride, have cargo capacity, safe battery technology and be able to be easily serviced and repaired. The GT500 is easy to ride and extremely low-cost to run. It delivers on all points.” Co-founder Camilla Iftakhar
Leading the way in battery safety
The Swifty GO is the only e-scooter to be powered by Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) a technology that recently won the company ‘Best Start-Up 2023’ at the influential Micromobility Industries Summit in the USA. LFP, the battery chemistry also used by Tesla, not only contains no harmful heavy metals like Nickel and Cobalt, but importantly, LFP is not prone to thermal runaway, making the Swifty GO battery one of the safest on the market.
The 15Ah LFP battery powers a 500W motor, can be fast-charged, and provides 25 miles of range. This makes the Swifty GO GT500 probably the cheapest mode of transport at only £0.006 per mile.
“The introduction of the SwiftyGO GT500 signifies a pivotal moment in British transportation history. We take great pride in being the first company to manufacture a road-legal e-scooter in the UK. We are confident that this milestone of innovation will influence the future of sustainable transportation, both in the UK and beyond.” Co-founder Jason Iftakhar
What’s the current legal status of e-scooters in the UK?
Privately owned e-scooters are not legal to ride on UK roads. The GT500 is the first and only Stand-On Moped available in the UK (L1e-B category) and is available to pre-order now for summer delivery.

Husqvarna Motorcycles is offering purchasers of the 2024 Norden 901, Norden 901 Expedition and Svartpilen 801 models the chance to double up on their standard 24-month factory warranty. To extend the two-year warranty to four years, riders around the globe simply have to get their motorcycle serviced at an authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealer. Additionally, the warranty period for Husqvarna Motorcycles Spare Parts and Technical Accessories for all street models will be extended to 24 months. Best of all, these warranty extensions come at no additional charge.
The warranty period is automatically extended provided regular services are carried out according to the service schedule, at an authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealer. The terms and conditions are identical to those of the initial manufacturer’s warranty.
Additionally, the Husqvarna Motorcycles manufacturer’s warranty is linked to the motorcycle and can be transferred to a new owner should the original owner sell their motorcycle. Jens Tuma – Senior Head of Customer Service: “We always advise our customers to use the official Husqvarna Motorcycles network to get their motorcycles serviced, purely because the staff are trained on those particular models and use approved parts and accessories where applicable. This way we can ensure best possible quality and value preservation of the bikes and it’s also a big reason why we’re really happy to make this warranty extension offer for customers of Husqvarna Motorcycles around the world.”

The iconic R&G Aero Crash Protectors have protected thousands of motorcycles worldwide, and the Hampshire-based brand is pleased to announce it is expanding the range further with the addition of applications for the 2024 KTM 1390 Super Duke R (EVO) and 125 Duke and the 2024 Kawasaki ZX-6R.
Unlike other products on the market, the stylish R&G Aero Crash Protectors are created using high-tensile steel bolts, which are designed to bend rather than shear or snap. This absorbs the impact and provides even greater protection in the event of a drop or fall. The protectors have been extensively tested by racers across the globe and are the protection of choice for some of the leading teams in the British Superbike Championship.
To ensure they remain in the correct position, each crash protector has compression sleeves inside. These sleeves allow the retaining bolts to be torqued to the correct specification so they are not worked loose by vibrations while on the road or track.
With fitments for hundreds of motorcycles already, R&G is expanding the range further with new applications for the 2024 KTM 1390 Super Duke R (EVO) and 125 Duke, as well as the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R. The full range can be found at https://www.rg-racing.com/browsetype/Crash_Protectors/.

Reigning Pirelli National Superstock champions AMD Motorsport and Richard Kerr have today (Thursday) announced they intend competing in the MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 Championship.
The Kilmacrennan, County Donegal rider, who took the British title after taking two wins and nine podiums during 2023, will continue on board the team’s Honda Fireblade and will be a Honda-supported rider in the series, which like its British counterpart takes place alongside America’s premier Superbike championship.
Kerr, 23, will be aiming to wrestle the title from reigning champion Hayden Gillim as he gets to compete at iconic circuits such as Laguna Seca, Barber Motorsports Park and Brainerd with additional rounds taking place at The Ridge Motorsports Park and New Jersey Motorsports Park, which will host the final round at the end of September.
As well as Gillim, Kerr’s expected rivals for the crown are expected to include former British Motostar Champion Brandon Paasch, last year’s runner up Kaleb De Keyrel, Travis Wyman and Ezra Beaubier, brother of multiple MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier.
Kerr is also eligible to contest the two feature MotoAmerica Superbike Championship races that take place on each weekend meaning he’ll have a busy schedule as he’ll contest a total of four races at each meeting.
Despite their absence from the Pirelli National Superstock Championship, AMD Motorsport will remain in the BSB paddock as they’ll again support PBM Racing and Jordan and Frank Bird jnr with the continuation of the race team. In addition, there’ll also continue to back KTS Racing and Jamie Coward at the International road races.
Richard Kerr: “Obviously, after nine years in the BSB paddock, we would have liked to have continued and step up to the BSB series but, unfortunately, no opportunities presented themselves, so we looked at other options and now that everything’s been confirmed, I’m very excited to be moving to the MotoAmerica series. There’s a whole world out there so getting the opportunity to experience something new is pretty cool and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
“The bikes have been shipped out already and will be based with Darrell Jones, who runs a Honda dealership and Ashton Yates in the MotoAmerica Superbike series, so we’ll just fly into each round which will allow me to concentrate on riding and learning the tracks. That will be the biggest hurdle, along with getting used to the Dunlop tyres, as I haven’t had to do that since I first came to the British tracks nine years ago but I’m very excited about the challenge especially as I’ll be competing at some iconic circuits. I’m confident we can do a good job.”
Fraser Dykes, Team Owner: “I’m very happy to continue supporting Richard in the development of his racing career by supplying our bikes for the MotoAmerica series project. It is fantastic news that Simon Bleasdale will now also be joining him Stateside to take forward the successful partnership that they have forged over the last couple of years, culminating in them winning the Pirelli National Superstock Championship with AMD Motorsport, It is exciting times and I am sure Cartersport Motorsport Media will keep us all up to date with their progress, Mary and I wish them every success in America and we hope to join them out there for a couple of rounds.”
The first round of the MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 Championship is scheduled to take place at Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama on May 17-19.

“5 Minutes with….” produced by First Turn Media with photos supplied by Lissy ( Bonnie Lane & Photostrada )
It’s a new dawn for female motorcycle racers with the announcement of the inaugural FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship which commences this year, the opening round being at the iconic Misano “Marco Simoncelli” circuit in June. Of the 24 riders listed to compete, there is 1 rider who stands out on the list and that’s the only British rider to be competing, Lissy Whitmore. Lissy will be teamed with American rider Mallory Dobbs riding under the Sekhmet Racing Team Banner, spearheaded by Team Principal Maddie Patterson.
As with most riders, the story starts with “a dad with a bike….”
Lissy: Yes, my dad always had a bike in the garage and worked within the British Superbike paddock with Vivaldi Racing Team, so it was always something that as a family we were all interested in. In 2017 I started racing a 140 Pit Bike in the British Mini Bike championship, doing a couple of rounds that were local to where we lived. Progressing onto a Bucci 160 and managing to get a few podiums.
SBN: How was your experience with the British Talent Cup selection process early in your racing career?
Lissy: Me and dad applied to BTC as a bit of fun, not really expecting anything to come from it and I certainly wasn’t going to be upset if I wasn’t selected to take part in the selection event. When the selection list came out, I was really shocked to see my name on it. I remember thinking, surely that’s just the applicants list. At this point I had only been riding a year and the selection event was to take place at Silverstone on the Stowe Circuit. Having not ridden bigger bikes at this point, myself and my dad booked into a Ron Haslam training event to get some practice in before the BTC selection day. I unfortunately had a crash on one of his training bikes, partly due to lack of experience but I really did learn a lot and felt more prepared for the day. Despite only making it through the first round of selection testing on the day, the overall life experience was brilliant. I got to meet Albert Apugio, whose teams I had watched on MotoGP and some of the people who were at the event are still good friends of mine today, it was 100 % a great experience and feel privileged to have been part of it.
SBN: So following on from this, how did you land at OMG Yamaha?
Lissy: It had always been a Lass and Dad, always just a family racing set up. We started doing some track days before we decided to move into BSB, unfortunately everything was just going wrong at this point with consistent bike issues. I think I only managed to complete all the races over a weekend at one round that season. It was the Oulton Park round when I was walking through the paddock and Alan Gardener shouted “oi – I want to talk to you” at the time I actually didn’t know who he was. I took my dad down to see him and after introductions, he invited us to Spain at the end of the year. It was offered as a, help us out kinda deal. We took our own bike out and we had a brilliant time and it really finished the year on a high. Not really giving the event much thought thereafter, it was when we went to pick the bike up in January and we met Alan at the pickup location that he offered me a ride on the OMG bike. Of course, I said yes.
SBN: How did the year play out?
Lissy: It was really good, I learnt so much, about everything. About myself, team environments and dynamics, racing, the bike and my riding. It was a fantastic experience and something I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do. I experienced a few hick ups as is with racing and towards the end of the year I had a nasty crash at Donington Park which I injured my ankle and put me out for the last round. Obviously not how I wanted to end the year, but on the whole I think we had a really good year and I learnt loads.
SBN: At the end of the season, you parted ways with OMG and you went Road Racing at Olivers Mount, how did that come about?
Lissy: Yes, after leaving OMG our plans were to return to BSB as a Lass & Dad team again, however I got really ill in March 23 and I only managed to dip into a couple rounds but I just wasn’t happy enough to stay and the illness had really set me back. I really wanted to get back to a place of fun in my riding at this point for myself. I have always had a desire to try Road Racing, it’s a little bit of my heart and my ultimate goal would be the TT so it seemed logical to get on with the plan and go Road Racing. Olivers Mount I thought would be a fantastic starting point and it’s our only Road Racing in the UK. I managed to do all the rounds bar 1 as I was wild carding at World Superbikes. It was fantastic and it really did bring my smile back and enjoyment back into my riding, I loved it.
SBN: The inaugural Women’s World Championship, wow – what an opportunity.
Lissy: I know right. Maddie (Patterson) approached me while I was at my wild card round with Worlds at Donington, she explained the details of this new women’s championship and that she was thinking of starting a team to compete and would I be interested in racing in the team. It was an absolute no brainer and a resounding yes. I always said to myself that if I was ever luckily enough to be offered a WSBK ride I would never say no. What a platform to grow on, there are so many talented females that are taking part that I feel so lucky to be apart of it and very humbled that I get to represent British female talent. I am also very lucky that I will still be able to take part in Olivers Mount this year to which the team support, though my priority will of course be the World Championship.
SBN: So outside of racing, what else does Lissy get up to?
Lissy: I did 5 years as an Army cadet, making it to corporal (covid hindered some further progression) It was a really interesting experience and I even managed to obtain my grenade license, though it has now expired. I participated in combat cadets, which is a national competition. I played football and athletics for the cadets, I think had I not have started racing then I would have gone into some form of the Military. I did apply for the RAF last year, but my eyesight isn’t quite the standard they require – though I must say its fine for my racing!
SBN: What training are you up to in the off season?
Lissy: I go to the gym every weekday and I really enjoy taking part in fitness classes, I find them really fun and social. I really enjoy running and biking too, generally I like just keeping active and this all helps ultimately for my overall bike fitness.
Lissy, if you could only eat one for forever, what would be? “My Mums spaghetti bolognaise”
Superbike News will be reporting on the Women’s World Championship in its inaugural year and we look forward to seeing Lissy’s progression, we are confident the racing will be just as entertaining as the rest of the support classes on the world stage.

Leading the line-up is the Norwegian pre-production Press Bike number 90009, two very collectable 1972 early production Z1’s, two Z1A models as well as a unique, original and unrestored Z1B.
Also in the sale is a pre-Kawasaki 1963 Meguro S8 Junior, Meguro were a huge producer of bikes in Japan in the 1960’s and were consumed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries when the Kawasaki brand was launched.
Other notable Kawasaki models in the sale include a restored 1972 European market H2A Triple, a super rare 1978 Z1000 Mk2, a 1986 GPZ900R, a 1988 GPZ1000RX, a UK model 1980 KE175 trail bike and a 1995 AR50.
Iconic Auctioneers Motorcycle Manger Mark Bryan says: “This auction is quite unique in the fact we have so many super quality Kawasaki’s, these are some of the best examples I’ve ever dealt with over my years in selling classic bikes at auction, it would be great to think they will all be ridden again but I suspect most will make their way into private collections.”

New warranty: 7 years from date of purchase.
In 2024, ROOF is one of the only manufacturer to master its entire manufacturing and distribution chain. The French Riviera manufacturer, with its high-quality products and its historically low after-sales return rate, has decided to extend the warranty period of its E22.06 helmets from 4 to 7 years. The process remains the same: simply registering the reference of the helmet after creating an account on the roof.fr website.
A service for the consumer, a strong argument for the seller
Like all usual warranties, the ROOF warranty covers the whole helmet, the parts and liners, as well as the screws, for all forms of manufacturing defects and excludes only all matters related to the normal wear and tear, or issues related to shocks or improper handling of the product.
By extending the warranty to 7 years, the French manufacturer of high-end helmets and fiber specialist, is one of the first motorcycle equipment manufacturer to offer such a service, thanks to its manufacturing process control and to the quality of its jet, modular and full-face helmets.
At a time when the sustainability of products and their quality/price ratio are two important topics for the final consumer, ROOF is proud to be part of a responsible approach and to support its dealers with a service that will have no impact on the sale price.

New for 2024, the Trident Triple Tribute celebrates Triumph’s legendary triple engines and will be available for one year only. This hugely popular naked roadster is now available with a distinctive graphic scheme, which is a contemporary take on Triumph’s iconic ‘white, blue and red’ racing scheme and features the distinctive ‘67’ number graphic, which once adorned the most famous Trident in history, ‘Slippery Sam’.
The Trident’s characterful and unique triple engine performance and celebrated handling will be even more enjoyable with the addition of Triumph Shift Assist adding to an already impressive specification and list of equipment for its class. Included as standard, the colour matched fly screen and belly pan add even more unique character to the Trident’s distinctive style, showcasing the exceptional standard of fit and finish that is synonymous with Triumph.

UNIQUE TRIPLE TRIBUTE EDITION DESIGN SCHEME
The Trident Triple Tribute has a stunning, modern design, inspired by the most celebrated Triumph triple bike of all time, ‘Slippery Sam’, which is the only motorcycle ever to win five TT production races in five consecutive years, from 1971 to 1975. The white, blue and red scheme with colour-matched fly screen and belly pan, stands out from the clean, minimal lines, beautiful silhouette and confident poise of the Trident. `
The distinctive tank design with number 67 race graphic surrounds the signature knee cut-outs, complementing the flowing seat line. With an impeccable attention to detail, the Trident 660 features high quality Triumph badges in both the headlight and taillight, and logo touches on the fuel filler cap, handlebar clamp and instruments, plus an inset aluminium Trident badge with diamond machined detailing. Body coloured radiator cowls, aluminium yokes & heel guards, body coloured fork protectors, tapered aluminium handlebars and teardrop shape mirrors, with five-spoke, black, lightweight, cast aluminium wheels, complete the eye-catching look.
TRIPLE ENGINE PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGE
Featuring a dedicated Trident tune, the popular 660cc triple engine was developed to deliver the character and performance benefits of a triple to riders in the middleweight sports naked category, providing the perfect balance of low-down torque, mid-range and top end power. A distinctive deep triple soundtrack is provided via a compact and minimal single sided silencer, with a premium stainless-steel finisher.
Fully Euro 5 compliant, the engine gives 81 PS peak power @ 10,250 rpm with a progressive, smooth and linear delivery, as well as 64 Nm peak torque @ 6,250 rpm. An accessory fit A2 conversion kit is available in Europe, including the A2-specific APS twist grip and a unique engine tune, which restricts peak power to 47 PS, or 35kW, and peak torque to 59 Nm. The bike can be de-restricted at the dealership, once the rider has completed their full licence.
The Trident’s smooth six-speed gearbox, with gear ratios and final drive that are optimised to make the riding experience easy and fun, is further enhanced by the addition of the Triumph Shift Assist, included as standard for this special edition. This quickshifter enables clutchless changes up and down the ratios, with an autoblipper on downshifts for fast, seamless changes.
CLASS LEADING HANDLING
Renowned for its agile, sporty and confidence-inspiring feel on the road, the Trident has an accessible 805mm seat height and a low wet weight of 189kg. It is already leading the class, with a high specification of branded equipment including black Showa upside down forks delivering 120mm front wheel travel, and Showa preload adjustable monoshock RSU with linkage, which delivers 133.5mm rear wheel travel.
For great stopping power, the Trident has two-piston Nissin brakes with twin 310mm discs and Michelin Road 5 tyres, giving the rider confidence in all weathers.

As the 2024 Principal Insurance Masters Superbike Championship got underway with pre-season testing on March 23rd & 24th, Kildare based Builders Work Solutions providers, Daracore, announced an expanded involvement with the returning championship.
The specialist construction company confirmed that they will remain as a sponsor of the championship for a fourth season, as they continue to expand their brand in both Ireland and the UK. Daracore will also return to the championship as a race team, with an increased three bike line-up and a new young rider academy.
Daracore is one of the UK and Ireland’s leading concrete cutting, drilling and demolition specialists operating out of Irish depots in Kildare and Cork and UK locations in Hatfield and Luton. Having previously backed Irish racers competing in the Masters and at the British Superbike Championship, as well as their championship sponsorship, the Rathangan based company will continue to use their involvement with the Masters to grow their brand, as well as entertaining clients and staff at Masters events.
In tandem with their Masters sponsorship, the Daracore Racing team will run 2021 Masters Supersport champion Kevin Keyes, alongside former Pre-Injection and Classic Superbike front runner Kevin Madigan. Keyes will campaign Superbike and Supersport machinery at the Masters as well as making his North West 200 and Isle of Man TT debuts for the team. Madigan will return to the Superbike Cup class where he will be looking to build on the maiden podium placing he achieved at the end of 2022.
The team will also take a young racer under their wing for 2024 as the first Daracore Racing Academy rider. Fourteen year old Cork youngster Fionn O’Connell will be part of the team at all Masters events as he takes his first steps in the Junior Supersport category. The team will provide him with technical assistance and guidance while Kevin Keyes will act as rider coach to the teenager.
Speaking of their return to the Masters Championship, Daracore’s Keith Farrell said “Following the insurance related cancellation of the 2023 Irish season we transferred to racing in the UK where we had great success with Kevin Keyes. We’re delighted to now be back racing at home in the Masters and we are looking forward to challenging for the Superbike and Supersport titles as well as the Superbike Cup. It’s also really exciting to be up and running with our new rider academy where we are kicking off 2024 with Fionn O’Connell as our chosen rider and hope to expand the initiative in future years. We’re also looking forward to being able to bring guests to the Masters events once again, to share in what we expect will be a very successful season.”
Championship manager Fergus Brennan welcomed the return of Daracore saying “We are delighted to have Daracore continue their involvement in the Masters for 2024. It would have been understandable if Keith and his team had decided to continue to race in the UK after our year off in 2023, but once again they have stuck with us and even expanded their involvement. The professionalism of the team and the Daracore organisation makes them a valuable addition to our championship and we look forward to working with them once again.”
The Masters Superbike Championship kicks off with the opening three races at Mondello Park on April 20th and 21st. To follow Daracore Racing’s progress in the Masters Championship see www.masterssuperbike.ie, or follow the series and Daracore’s social media channels.

Trimby will become the first non-rider to be inducted in the Hall of Fame, honouring his off-track contributions to the sport.
Mike Trimby will be named a MotoGP™ Legend in 2024, honouring a life dedicated to motorcycle Grand Prix racing. Trimby was the founder and CEO of IRTA, thereby becoming one of the most important figures in the history of motorcycle Grand Prix racing and playing a pivotal role in shaping the sport MotoGP™ has become.
To celebrate his contribution to the sport, he will become the first person inducted into the Hall of Fame wholly due to their work off-track.
That said, Trimby did begin his career as a rider and mechanic in the 1960s. However, he soon started to emerge as a key figure off-track and had established himself as such by the late 1970s. In 1982, the riders officially requested Trimby to act as their representative, something further formalised a few years later with the founding of the International Road Racing Teams Association (IRTA) in 1986, with Trimby at the helm.
Advocating for riders and teams, IRTA has remained a pivotal part of the sport. The huge progress in safety made since the organisation was founded is thanks in large part to the work undertaken by Trimby, his wife Irene, and IRTA.
1992 also marked the beginning of the great collaboration between the FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports, which likewise owes much to the foundations laid by IRTA over the decade before, giving riders and teams a voice at the table.
Trimby will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, officially becoming a MotoGP™ Legend.
Irene Trimby: “Mike would have been very honoured about receiving this prestigious award, and everyone who knew him knows he never would have expected it either. It’s wonderful for his work and legacy to be acknowledged in this way, although I’m sure he might also have been a little embarrassed to see us putting on a ceremony and giving him a trophy! It’s also something very special for me, for everyone who worked closely with him, and everyone who continues to miss him very much. Thank you very much.”
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports: “Mike’s contribution to motorcycle Grand Prix racing is truly monumental, and we’re proud to name him a MotoGP Legend. Since the concept of MotoGP Legends was born, it has always been about more than numbers. There are no criteria based on simple race wins or number of championships, it’s about contribution to the sport – be it off-track, on-track or a combination of the two. So it’s fitting that Mike becomes the first figure honoured purely for his off-track impact, as his work in this sport was truly second to none. It will be an honour for us, and for me, to induct Mike into the Hall of Fame. He is greatly missed and we race on in his memory.”
Mike Trimby will join the list of his fellow MotoGP™ Legends in the Hall of Fame: Giacomo Agostini, Hugh Anderson, Hans-Georg Anscheidt, Kork Ballington, Max Biaggi, Alex Crivillé, Mick Doohan, Stefan Dörflinger, Andrea Dovizioso, Geoff Duke, Wayne Gardner, Mike Hailwood, Nicky Hayden, Jorge Lorenzo, Daijiro Kato, Eddie Lawson, Marco Lucchinelli, Randy Mamola, Anton Mang, Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez, Angel Nieto, Dani Pedrosa, Wayne Rainey, Phil Read, Jim Redman, Kenny Roberts, Kenny Roberts Jr, Valentino Rossi, Jarno Saarinen, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Marco Simoncelli, Freddie Spencer, Casey Stoner, John Surtees, Luigi Taveri, Carlo Ubbiali and Franco Uncini.
On the heel of an emotional year, it’s truly inspiring to see how Joe channels his emotions into his commitment, passion and the love for the sport as a tribute to his late father. In speaking with Joe, it’s evident that his father is the foundation of his decisions and his family as a whole play a significant role in shaping who he is today and the plans he has for 2024 and beyond.
SBN: Let’s start at the beginning, who got you on your first bike and into racing?
Joe: My family are a very motorbike orientated family, my mum used to ride on the road, my sister used to race motocross and still rides now and my dad used to race. So the first time I ever put my leg over a bike was when I was about 2 and half years old. I had to beg my dad every single day to get me a motorbike. He finally said, if I could ride my push bike without stabilisers we’ll go out and buy you a bike. So off we went to this local park with a big downhill and he took me to the top and took my stabilisers off and made me go down it, god ,it said it pained him to see me do this as I was chucking myself down this hill and we must have done it 15 or 20 times before I stopped falling off. My parents are a big believer in never pushing anyone into anything but never stopping them from doing anything either. Eventually we got there after a lot of grass stains, and after I finally cracked it I said “right dad, take me to buy a bike” and that’s what he did. I did motocross up till about the age of 11 or 12, bit of enduro.
SBN: Why did you make the change to sports bikes?
Joe: My dad raced in Thundersport, and had won a few championships, however in 2011 unfortunately had quite a bad crash at barn corner at Cadwell Park and shattered his pelvis. My dad didn’t start racing till he was near 40 and had a good for 10 years at it, but when your 50 you just don’t repair the same. That particular weekend for some reason we had three vehicles, the van, the 7.5 tonne lorry and my mum had driven down in her car so there was all sorts of drama in trying to get everything home with him not being able to drive. I think it was then he realised he was getting a bit to old for it and it was my turn to take over. I wanted to do the Superteen challenge, while my dad was racing the superteens was really big back then, it had Chrissy Rouse, Fraser Rogers, David Allingham, a lot of names went through there over the years. So that’s what I wanted to do, I was bored of motocross, fed up of getting dirty and I wanted to race Aprillias
SBN: How did you get on switching over?
Joe: Despite my dad not thinking I’d stick at it in the early days, and hoping to resell the bike he bought me, I actually loved it and have been racing 14 years now. I won the formula 400 championship in Thundersport, and I was doing well on the 600 for my first year, but then had my biggest injury I have ever had. I came back to racing and went straight into British Superbikes in 2018 and finished 2nd in the Superstock 600 championship, which was the year that Ryan Vickers won it. In 2019, when I was 19 years old we moved up to Superstock 1000 class and we have been dipping our toe in and out of stock superbike class ever since really. But not quite has the success that I would have wanted in that class. Last year, 2023 would have been a strong year for me on the Suzuki that me and my dad had run, I think my best finish was top 6 at Oulton Park and the year was going very well but unfortunately my dads health was going downhill rapidly. The Doninington park meeting was the first race meeting that my dad hadn’t been to, he was in hospital at the time so we got a load of friends to help me out but my mind wasn’t quite in it and I made a costly mistake and I broke my foot and ankle and crashed the bike pretty badly. So that put a bit of a dampener on the year racing wise and not many weeks later my dad passed away. Everything changed completely, as you can imagine. I took some time out, it was a very difficult process and still is to be fair. However, racing is all me and my family know, it feels like home and racing feels like a comfort. Its where all your friends are, its where you spend of your time so I knew that I would come back to it.
SBN: How did you manage to get back out racing again?
Joe: Money is always tight for anyone that’s racing, but after going through what we had and with dads funeral costs, it had made things even tighter and not to mention the bike that I had just crashed needed rebuilding. Steve Brogan contacted me, he knew things were tight and he contacted Kawasaki and Nic Morgan and pulled a few strings and managed to get me back out on the ZX10 for a couple of rounds. Coming back from my injury and the emotional scars, it wasn’t a great year but to just get back out and to everyone who made it possible I can’t thank enough, and it’s what I felt I needed to do to help get me through.
SBN: So, looking to the 2024 season – how are you feeling?
Joe: I think I have grown a lot in the last couple of months, I have got a really good ride, competitive ride with MAD racing back on board a Kawasaki. I have known Dave and Mandy who own MAD racing for a number of years from the paddock, myself and Luke Hedger have always been pretty close on track, sometimes needing a tow off me and other me needing a tow from him, so there was already a good relationship between us. We went to the last round of the of the 2023 on the Suzuki that me and my dad had originally built with the help from MSG Racing , flying my own flag and as a send off for my dad. We had a really good outing, think we finished 12th that meeting. Dave tracked me down as we were packing away from that event and asked me to join the team and ride for the 2024 season. He thinks with some nurturing, some confidence and some good finishes we can do a good job. Our first test on the bike will be at the Snetterton Endurance round with No Limits racing, 23 March with the MAD racing team of Jake Cambell and Jake Hopper.
SBN: Lets talk MotoAmerica and your love of the USA.
JOE: MotoAmerica is something that me and my dad always spoke about, I love America, I love everything about it I think its great. It’s something I have always tried to get my foot into. I was working closely with Michael Hill last year to try and get a deal going but nothing ever came of it, it’s quite a difficult place to get into but its still something that I would love to go and do, and if the opportunity would arise I always keep my plans open to do it every year and I would grasp it with two hands if given the chance. The first time I went to America was in 2016. I had an ex who lived out in the suburbs of Chicago for a number of years and had friends who had a ranch, we went out there, they have buggys, go shooting, camp fires and smores. Its brilliant and the I fell in love with the all American lifestyle. If I can live there, have a ranch with horses and make money at racing I would be very happy.
SBN: You mention Michael, was it him that helped you onto the WSBK paddock show, is commentary something you’re interested in?
Joe: I have known Michael a few years now, we started messaging on social media after I got announced for riding with CDH Racing in 2022, he’s been really great in opening my social media up and getting people hearing about me and things just developed from there. He doesn’t live to far from me either and we would do some pit biking through winter. He’s a really great person to have in your corner and that’s how I ended up doing the Paddock Show at Donington Park. My dad has always said that I have got a knack for just talking and talking about all sorts of rubbish and it’s something I do enjoy, I have been invited up to the commentary booth at BSB or club meetings in the past and I have always really enjoyed it and I think I have always come across relatively ok. It’s something to consider when I am older for sure.
SBN: You now work for yourself, how has that been?
Joe: Forward Vision was born to get a bit of freedom, my dad was self employed for going on 30 years and worked from the house for 25 years of them and I have always had my family around, he employed my mum and it was great to be brought up that way and it’s something that I want for my family in years to come. The business was an idea that came about from myself, my dad and my friend Lewis, who is now my business partner. I am a trained technician and have worked at a main dealer for 7 years, specialising in Aprillia so have a lot of experience and I felt I had everything I needed to go self-employed, so I started the business about a year ago and I still had a full time job at the time. It’s gained traction over that year that so I was able to leave my job. We have all sorts coming through, race bike builds, track prep and we have a deal with a couple of dealerships so we get a lot of road bikes through. We are also buying and selling bikes, we even do the occasional car. It also has freed up time so that I can go testing with the bikes, racing and all sorts of stuff which is important as I started to get older that I had the time to still do these things that me and my family had worked so hard to build on without the stress of a full time job and worrying about being away from it.
SBN: Your racing logo is a cowboy hat and guitar, do you play?
Joe: I learnt it at school, but I life happened (racing) and I put it down. It wasn’t until Lockdown during covid that I picked it up again and started to play. I loved lockdown, I had the best time. The weather was stunning, I was off work and I kinda went back to that experience that I had while I was in America, round fires at night when the temperature dropped and I started making smores and listening to country music. It was great, it was probably the fittest I had ever been, I was cycling all the time with Joey Thompson, 60km a day, we’d have some lunch then we’d go into the gym that he had and also eating really clean, the experience really pushed my love for America even more really.
SBN: What’s your ultimate goal, Moto America?
Joe: 100% I would snap someone’s hand off for a chance at MotoAmerica, but the ultimate goal has been since I was 12 years old, where I wrote a 10 year plan at school – right, I know.. some kids were putting down a millionaire but I wrote a 10 year plan for my racing. At 10 years old I wanted to be in the superteens, then wanted to go to 400’s, 600’s in the British championship then I wanted to go to the 1000, then I either wanted o to go to supersport in world’s or superbikes in worlds, worlds was and still is my ultimate goal, but its like anything in racing its all about the money and I know the money is really good in America. Up to the age of 19 I was on target with my plan, but the stock 1000 championship, it’s very competitive and it’s knocked my off that target a little bit, but the goal still the same, world championship but I think MotoAmerica would be a fantastic step towards that.
SBN: You have some fantastic hobbies, anything you would consider taking up if you weren’t a racer?
Joe: I like anything, I have been sky diving, skiing I have had the odd flying lesson. I like anything that is scary. I haven’t found anything yet, skiing was very close and sky diving was close to the kind of feeling that you get on the grid or with racing, but I haven’t found anything to quite match it yet.
SBN: If you weren’t a racer, what do you think you would be doing now instead?
Joe: I have been asked this question a few times and I honestly could not tell you, I haven’t got an answer for it, there is nothing else, nothing I could picture myself doing other than bikes and racing.
Finally Joe, what’s the one food you couldn’t live without?
“ Pesto Pasta with sundried tomatoes, bacon and mozzarella” Very fancy Joe!
Wishing Joe all the best for the 2024 season on board the Kawasaki with the MAD racing team, and if anyone reading has any connection for MotoAmerica we know someone who with bite your hand off 😉
IX-AIRBAG U04 and IX-AIRBAG U05: discover a new generation of airbags.
Choose the ultimate experience. 6 years after offering the first universal electronic airbag on the market, the iconic IX-AIRBAG U03, the IXON brand is presenting a new generation of airbag in 2024. Now, discover the IX-AIRBAG U05: inspired by Research & Development work with the brand’s MotoGP riders, IXON is reinventing the link between protection and comfort. You can push your limits anywhere with a product that can be used in all environments: thanks to its 3 fall detection modes, the IX-AIRBAG U05 is suitable for Road, Racing and Adventure use.
These new airbags are equipped with AIRFLOW CHANNEL technology, a unique and advanced ventilation system that provides maximum cooling for the body. The air flow is guided in and out of the airbag by 3D Mesh channels along the entire back and torso of the lining, inside the airbag. The specific 45° orientation of the 3D Mesh channels and the two central ventilation channels – on the torso on either side of the central zip and in the back in a central position – ensure optimum diffusion of the air flow and regulation of body temperature.
This technology has been developed in competition, directly with IXON MotoGP riders: it is used in the suits worn by Aleix Espargaro, Brad Binder, Miguel Oliveira and Takaaki Nakagami. The result of several years’ work on the track with some of the world’s best riders, AIRFLOW CHANNEL technology is now available to the general public.
The IX-AIRBAG U04 and IX-AIRBAG U05 offer perfect riding sensations thanks to the choice of ultra-light materials, a design that doesn’t restrict movement and a cut that’s very close to the body.
They are also highly versatile products: thanks to the 3 fall detection modes built into the In&box electronic unit designed by In&motion, these airbags are suitable for Road, Racing and Adventure use.
Protecting vital areas of the upper body, the IX-AIRBAG U04 and IX-AIRBAG U05 offer a high level of protection: these high standards have made it possible for the two airbags to be approved by various national federations in Europe and by the FIM, enabling them to be used in competition on circuits.

SW-Motech Pro Blaze Panniers are now available for the latest generation MT-09 and MT-09 SP, adding much-needed carrying capacity to the stripped-down Yamaha street bikes.
Designed specifically for bikes with minimalist rear-ends like the MT-09, the Pro Blaze system offers the stability of hard luggage without the bulky scaffolding that’s normally involved.
To get set up, just fix the two discreet Quick Lock Mounts to the bike’s rear footrest hangers, then push in the two support rails; they’re now ready to accept the panniers.
The bags themselves are also a doddle to attach: just slide on the rails and clip in place. A wide Velcro® strap sits over the seat, securing them both together and distributing the load
The beauty of the rails is they keep the load stable, secure and away from the rear wheel and chain. They also stop the panniers moving, even during hard riding. When the panniers aren’t needed, the rails can be removed leaving only the clamps behind, and the bike uncluttered.
Lightweight and durable, Pro Blaze Panniers are made from a tough, UV-resistant 1680D Ballistic Fabric. EVA-reinforced sidewalls keep the bags in shape and their contents well protected. Each set comes with removable waterproof inner bags too.
Capacity is a generous 40 litres in total, and each bag can be expanded for extra capacity when needed. There’s also a Hypalon MOLLE system, for attaching additional SW Motech bags and carriers.
Super easy to live with, the main section is accessed via a wide top opening and there’s a handy zippered outside pocket for the essentials. A solid carrying handle makes them easy to handle off the bike.
A Pro Blaze system for the current MT-09 and MT-09 SP retails at just £346-including VAT.
Each set comes with everything needed to get set up: two saddlebags, model-specific Quick Lock Mounts and support rails, two waterproof inner bags, paint protection film, instructions and all fittings.

From the unique volcanic surface of Argentina’s opening round, the MXGPWorld Motocross Championships had to deal with high temperatures and baked-hard ruts here in Spain as the 2024 season reached European soil for the first time.
The Spanish fans who had flocked to the circuit near the nation’s capital of Madrid were certainly treated to the spectacle that they would have wanted to see, as home heroes Red Bulll GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado in MXGP, and RFME GASGAS MX Junior’s Daniela Guillen in the WMX Women’s World Motocross Championship season opener, both drove the crowd into rapturous applause as they dominated their classes with perfect unbeaten weekends.
Whilst MX2 saw close racing again, the overall winner was also the same as in Argentina, as Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolfincreased his Championship advantage with the overall victory, but Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo gave notice that he will not give up his crown easily with a win in the second race to climb the podium for the first time as defending World MX2 Champion.
JorgePrado was focussed on the job in hand all weekend, even with the extra pressures of being World Champion, Red Plate Holder, and national hero, he simply was not going to be denied in front of his adoring fans. With frightening accuracy, he launched his Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing machine into the lead immediately in both races, with the Fox Holeshot Award an absolute formality both times.
In race one, it was the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP pairing of Maxime Renaux and Calvin Vlaanderen that gave chase as Prado put in devastating sub-1:52 lap times that no-one else could match. Team Ship to Cycle Honda rider Valentin Guillod made his presence felt early, but title contenders such as Tim Gajser for Team HRC, Romain Febvre for Kawasaki Racing Team, and Jeffrey Herlings for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing all had to fight forward from average starts.
One-by-one the former World Champions fired past Guillod, but Prado built an insurmountable lead that nobody could overhaul. Renaux started to drop back with pain from his foot injury sustained here last May. He would not make it to the start of race two. Gajser brought the Honda home in 2nd place over 8 seconds ahead of the cruising Prado, while Herlings won a back-and-forth battle with Febvre to take 3rd ahead of the Frenchman. Renaux clung on to 5th ahead of Fantic Factory Racing rider Glenn Coldenhoff.
Race 2 promised a more intense battle as Gajser and Febvre both got away in Prado’s wheel tracks, 2nd and 3rd, and Herlings quickly moved up to 4th by the start of the first full lap. This time they had no cause for complaint – they had started right with the Champ!
In front of a baying crowd though, urged on by trackside commentators who will surely need the throat sweets tomorrow morning, Prado showed that he can now pull away from the three former World Champions as he left them all in his wake. His best lap time came again on lap two, amazingly a tiny nine-thousands of a second faster than his best from race one!
Although Febvre got close to challenging Gajser with around five minutes left to go in the race, he could not find a way past as the circuit had reached its most challenging level of the weekend, and the top five stayed as Prado, Gajser, Febvre, Herlings, and Vlaanderen throughout the race. Vlaanderen put in his best ride yet on the factory Yamaha team to help make up for the absence of Renaux. Coldenhoff got close to him but took a tumble before the finish line to knock himself out of the race.
The overall result was the same as race two’s, except for Jeremy Seewer taking fifth overall for the Kawasaki Racing Team through consistent 7-6 finishes. Prado extends his Championship lead to ten points over Gajser, with Febvre 12 further back in 3rd and Herlings now up to 4th. All three chasers will be hoping that the sands of Sardegna, in two weeks’ time, will give them the opportunity to claw back some points on the runaway defending Champion.
Jorge Prado: “This is all about racing, winning here in Spain is special! It has been a perfect weekend just winning every single time I went out on track. I can’t be more happy to be honest and do it on home-soil makes everything special with so many fans that came here and me giving them this victory is amazing. I feel super proud of what I did and of course I want to thank all my team RedBull GasGas Factory Racing that supported me during all weekend; we are doing an amazing job and let’s keep it rolling.”
Tim Gajser: “It was a consistent weekend and to be honest I need to be happy, today Jorge was really impressive, in Race 1 I had a good start and I couldn’t reach him I saw he had a consistent gap of 12 second so I didn’t even push to not make any mistakes. In Race 2 I’ve tried becaue we were together but then he made a little gap and from behind I had Romain pushing hard so I prefered taking the points and be consistent. Thanks to all my team and my family for the great support during the weekend.”
Romain Febvre: “I’m happy to finish on the podium because this weekend I really struggled on the starts. As you could see in Race 1, I had a really bad start so we decided to make a big change for Race 2 and it worked because I’ve almost took the FOX Holeshot so for that I’m a bit disappointed that we found the solution only at the end of the weekend but the pass was good and anyway Jorge was really fast this weekend so I’m happy to be third on the podium. Thanks to all the team for the work and let’s keep going.”
After his RAM Qualifying Race win on Saturday, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s red plate holder Kay de Wolfstarted to look close to unstoppable, which was maybe the reason why Thibault Benistant decided to make a strong move with his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 machine in the third corner of race one to keep the Dutchman from advancing any further! They were all chasing the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing rider Simon Laengenfelder, who took his first Fox Holeshot Award of the season ahead of Benistant and his fast-starting teammate at Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, Rick Elzinga.
F&H Kawasakirookie Quentin Prugnieres got in on the fun by block-passing Liam Everts, back from injury for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, for 4th place in a frantic first lap! On the run up to the finish area, De Wolf roared round the outside of Elzinga for 3rd, but simultaneously his teammate Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen suffered a slide that put him directly into the path of Prugnieres! Quentin had nowhere to go and hit the ground, eventually recovering to 17th.
Langenfelder attempted to sprint away at the front as De Wolf took until the third lap to get past Benistant for 2nd. The Yamaha man had a difficult race as he lost several positions, finally finishing 7th after a rough-looking crash on a downhill corner.
Almost at the 20-minute mark, De Wolf found a burst of speed and forced Laengenfelder to back out of doing the big uphill triple jump, pulling a spectacular “stork” move to clear the distance himself and take the lead, which he never lost!
Laengenfelder had a threat from Lucas Coenen as well, but the Belgian lost his footing in a rut on the final lap and the top three stayed in that order with Everts a solid 4th and Mikkel Haarup a charging 5th for Monster Energy Triumph Racing after making a late move on Adamo.
Just when MX2 might have started to look a little predictable, race 2 saw a shake up in the order again as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Adamo showed the strength of his resolve. The team was briefly running 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the start as Sacha Coenen took the Fox Holeshot ahead of Adamo and Everts, although Benistant broke up the party with two swift passes to climb to 2nd by the start of the first full lap!
De Wolf was once more on the charge and passed Benistant with an over-jump that looked painful on landing, but got the job done! He swept around Sacha Coenen to lead after four minutes and it looked like the race was over, but Adamo was having none of it and also demoted his younger teammate shortly afterwards. Sacha made a mistake in the waves and dropped several positions to eventually come home in 8th.
Adamo dug into his reserves to chase down De Wolf, something few people have done this season, and by half-distance he had closed the gap and made a sharp move up the inside of a flat right-hander! The Reigning Champ passed the current Championship leader, and Kay could not stay with his pace.
Behind them, Laengenfelder, from a start outside the top ten, had to make passes on first Everts, then Benistant, to climb to 3rd. Monster Energy Triumpg Racing’s Camden McLellan briefly challenged Everts but would finish in 7th, the first Triumph rider home as Haarup dropped his machine with two laps to go!
Both Everts and Benistant fell prey to a charging Lucas Coenen, who got up to 4th by the flag, but all eyes were on De Wolf as he resumed his charge on Adamo in the closing laps, only to miss a rut with his rear wheel and slide to the floor! He picked it up in time to just hold off Laengenfelder, and although Adamo celebrated both his first race win and overall podium finish as reigning World Champion, it was Kay De Wolf who brought home the overall Grand Prix victory for the second round in a row, and for the third time in his career!
De Wolf now leads the standings by 12 points from Laengenfelder, who took 2nd overall. With Adamo’s win lifting him up to 3rd in the GP as well as the in the Championship, he heads with renewed confidence to the next two rounds on Italian soil that start on the first weekend of April, although with Sardegna’s treacherous sand to come, everyone knows that it’s going to be an awesome confrontation!
Kay De Wolf: “I’ve worked really hard in all the races especially for the second one where the pace was really fast and incredible for all of us; I tried to catch Andrea till the last lap but then I did few mistakes that made me think of the classification and relax a bit and follow my rhythm. I can’t thank enough the team for all the hard work they did this weekend and for preparing the bike in the best shape possible.”
Simon Laengenfelder: “I rode really well attacking almost all Race 2, even if I was faster than Kay I couldn’t find a good line to pass him and I had to keep the third position but for the next race I’m sure I can do better”
Andrea Adamo “Like I said already, it was a really tough winter for me; I’ve been struggling a lot and I came in Argentina totally not ready for it and only my team knows how hard it was for me. Here in Spain I’ve found more confidence with the bike and session after session once I go on the track I’m getting faster and more confident and finally today I got the win in race 2 which feels like a GP win. Now I’m really happy and I want to keep going in this way.”

Headlines, history and adrenaline on the rollercoaster: Martin takes the Championship lead as the storylines overflow in Portugal.
The 2024 Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal was a stunning lights to flag win for Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) as the number #89 took the victory and the Championship lead with it. But this is the world’s most exciting sport, and there are no single sentence explanations to cover 25 laps of MotoGP™ on the rollercoaster. Martin won, and Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) chased him close all the way until a heartbreaking last lap technical issue. Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) came though to take second and his first podium of the year. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech 3) made history as the third youngest podium finisher in premier class history with an incredible charge past Champions past and present. And?
11 World Championships went toe-to-toe, and all of them slid off into the runoff. Riders ok, but in one of the most dramatic incidents for some time, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) collided with only a handful of laps to go. The FIM MotoGP™ Stewards officially deem it a racing incident, but it seems a moment that will be debriefed for weeks, months, if not years to come.
But back to the start. It was a stunning launch from Martin to take the holeshot, with Bastianini slotting in behind as Bagnaia shot up a place. Viñales initially dropped to fourth then fought back, round the outside of the reigning Champion. Bastianini was then slightly wide and Viñales headed through, with the two Ducatis then shuffling. Marc Marquez tried his luck with a move through too, but it settled down slightly after the adrenaline spike with Martin leading Viñales, Bastianini, Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.
Martin looked to be trying to break, but Viñales responded to stay in touch, and likewise Bastianini. What was a seven tenth gap became five and then three as the Aprilia dug in. Bastianini was holding station in third ahead of Bagnaia and Marc Marquez, with an RC-16 war raging on their tail.
Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) led teammate Jack Miller led Acosta, but the gloves were off and the South African made his move as Miller was then sent a little wide at Turn 1. His teammate was through, and so was Acosta – before the rookie then also attacked Binder at the same place not long after. The charge to history was on.
From there, it was target lock on Marc Marquez. And he homed in and did the same with a brutal move at Turn 1, pitched perfectly to make his way past but not open the door enough to allow the eight-time World Champion to reply.
At the front, Martin marched on, and so did Viñales as he shadowed. Bastianini held station, close enough to be cooking something up, as behind another titanic battle erupted.
Acosta’s charge didn’t stop at Marc Marquez as the rookie homed in on the reigning Champion next. He chose Turn 1 again, but the rear slipped once, then twice, and he headed just wide enough getting it back under control to let Pecco back through. Not long after, Acosta was able to get past Bagnaia once again, and that left the reigning Champion to go toe-to-toe with Marc Marquez. And then came the drama.
Marquez went for one attempt but the door was shut. This time he wasn’t going to try and push it open a la Sprint, either. Four laps to go saw the Gresini remain an absolute shadow, but Bagnaia gained a little breathing space next time round. Just enough that when the #93 did strike, it was another absolute lunge – and it nearly did work. But Bagnaia is Bagnaia and the reigning Champion had anticipated, took back the inside line as tightly as possible… and that was that. The two diverged on the same space, and two into one doesn’t fit. Contact made, they both slid out as the crowd erupted.
Meanwhile, the rider sweeping past to take that fourth place? Acosta. But there was another twist in the tale for another rider up ahead, with fourth about to become premier class history.
Crossing the line for the last lap, Martin had enough in hand to bet on. But Viñales was suddenly slowing, hanging off the bike and then looking down as he headed into the run off. A late technical issue made it a heartbreaking end to the GP race for the Sprint winner, as he then crashed out as it said no more. And that put Acosta on the podium after his gung-ho charge for glory.
Up ahead, Bastianini was close to Martin, but not close enough to strike. The #89 achieved the 89th victory for Ducati in style, winning holeshot to flag despite the drama and the tension in the chase. Bastianini, after a tougher Qatar GP and Sprint in Portugal, gets that podium to begin his count for the season, and then comes Acosta.
The number #31 is the third youngest premier class podium finisher of all time, getting it done in only his second race to join an exclusive club. Acosta was also the first over the line of the trio of KTM/GASGAS RC16s, with Binder taking fourth and Miller fifth.
Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) took P6 and was able to stay ahead of Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™), who took P7 after a weekend getting straight through to Q2 too. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) managed to come through to P8, ahead of home hero Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing) in ninth. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) completed the top ten but by hundredths ahead of Augusto Fernandez (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3). Find full results below.
So the dust settles on Sunday evening. Or does it? One incident can become a whole storyline, or a move re-calculated. Or just the calm, certain desire to make sure that when next time comes, you’re coming out on top. The best rivalries build between those on a level that enables them to take each other on – and still back themselves.
Next up? Next up it’s the Circuit of the Americas. Only three riders have ever won a MotoGP™ race in Austin, and only one of them has done it seven times. The rider who’ll most want to stop him making that eight is the same who defeated the eight-time World Champion on the way to his first ever MotoGP™ victory – and the only rider to take back-to-back MotoGP™ crowns alongside his mentor, Valentino Rossi, and that very same Marc Marquez. Join us for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas – hopefully we don’t need to ask twice.
Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) is a Moto2™ race winner! The Spaniard broke his victory drought with a stylish win by two seconds as the podium fight exploded behind him in Portugal.
Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) completed a brilliant weekend at Portimao to take second, fighting off polesitter Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) before Gonzalez had his own showdowns to secure that third place. Meanwhile, Fermin Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp) had to do two long laps after jumping the start, leaving him down the order but still fast as ever as the new Ducati signing set off on a charge.
Aldeguer led into Turn 1, but soon teammate Alonso Lopez hit the front, launching an attack on his teammate even before Aldeguer served the first of his penalties. The #54 then took his first LLP on lap four, dropping down to 11th before the second on lap seven, dropping to 13th.
Canet set the pace early on, stealing the fastest lap of the race while sitting in second – setting sights on a first Moto2™ win. Polesitter Gonzalez sat in third position after finding a way through on the fast-charging Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI). Ogura’s fourth did not last long as Roberts and Albert Arenas (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) found a way through.
As laps ticked down, Lopez maintained an advantage at the front until lap 11, when the race was blown wide open as the Spaniard lost the front at turn 13 – crashing out the lead. That promoted Canet to p1 and Roberts into second at the venue where the American claimed his first win in 2021.
All eyes were now on Canet in the lead and Aldeguer, who was carving through the field and back inside the top 10 in two laps. The Spaniard soon set the fastest lap, circulating quicker than Canet at the front of the field with 10 laps remaining.
Tony Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) was having a ferocious battle with Jeremy Alcoba (Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team) for seventh position, allowing Arenas to escape in front. They could not match the pace of Aldeguer on his mission to the front, as the #54 flew down the inside and remarkably entered fifth place.
It was beginning to build to be an incredible end to the race with a battle brewing inside the front group. Gonzalez found a way through on Roberts, trying to up the pace and catch Canet at the front.
Now with just three laps to go the gloves were off after Aldeguer launched a brave attack at turn three to pass Ogura briefly before the Japanese rider responded. Meanwhile, Roberts entered second position before Gonzalez quickly responded – putting pressure on the American.
Two laps remained as the dream began to look like a reality for Canet, crossing the line with a lead of almost two seconds with just 2.85 miles to go. You could cut the tension with a knife on the last lap of the race with Canet leading as an all-out battle for the final place on the podium was happening behind.
As the chequered flag loomed, Canet even celebrated round the final corner before finally becoming a Moto2™ race winner. Roberts continues to celebrate success In Portimao, finishing second ahead of Gonzalez, who finally got the better of Aldeguer after Ogura dropped to fifth on the final lap after a near highside on the exit of turn four battling the #54.
Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) battled to sixth place, in yet another impressive race from the Spaniard, ahead of Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Arenas, Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing Team) and Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) rounding out the top ten. Alcoba and Arbolino continued their battle to the line but dropped down to 11th and 12th at the end of 21 laps.
Now it’s destination: Texas for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, with another 25 points on the table.
Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) won a classic drag to the line finish at the stunning Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, staying ahead of Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) by just 0.044 as the two battled it out on the last lap.
Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets – MSI) completed the podium as the lead trio turned up the wick in the final few laps to escape former race leader David Alonso (CFMoto Gaviota Aspar Team).
Rueda took the holeshot and had his turn making a gap, managing to stay ahead of the group until 10 to go. Then Alonso made his move and looked to be trying to make a break as the gap extended. But not so, as Holgado and Rueda duo closed the CFMoto Aspar rider down, got past, and in a handful of laps had been able to make their own gap.
Onto the last lap, it seemed likely it would remain a duel. Holgado led over the line with Rueda for close company, with Ortola just off the back but forced to wait in the wings for any possible drama. Rueda went for a move at Turn 14 and was briefly ahead taking a tighter line, but the number 99 couldn’t keep it as Holgado pinned it and swept back into the lead. It all came down to the final corner and again, the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 was able to stay ahead and gas it towards the line with just enough metres in hand to take his first Grand Prix win of the year – and the Championship lead.
Rueda may not have taken the win but it’s his best Grand Prix result yet, as well as only his second podium. Ortola completed the rostrum another seven tenths back, but managing to keep more than a second in hand over those on the chase: Alonso, Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsports) and Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) in that order.
Stefano Nepa (LEVELUP – MTA) took P7 ahead of top rookie Joel Esteban (CFMoto Gaviota Aspar Team), with David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports) beating Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing) and rookie Jacob Roulstone (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) in a close finish for P9.
After another classic Moto3™ encounter, the field now heads for Austin, TX for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas in a few weeks.
The first Aruba.it Racing – Ducati one-two of the season saw Alvaro Bautista claim the honours in Race 2 ahead of Nicolo Bulega
A third podium of the season sees Bulega extend his Championship lead to 12 points. Toprak Razgatlioglu claimed back to back race victories for ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team by winning the Tissot Superpole Race before taking third in Race 2.
The final day of the Pirelli Catalunya Round saw a daring last corner move from Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK) surprise Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) to take the victory in the Tissot Superpole Race. The Turkish rider became the first BMW rider since Chaz Davies in 2013 to take back to back WorldSBK wins. Despite having to settle for a podium in Race 2 this was a superb weekend for Razgatlioglu who now sits fourth in the Championship standings.
The much touted battle of Alvaro Bautista versus Nicolo Bulega played out in Race 2. On this occasion it was double WorldSBK Champion Bautista who used his guile to win. The victory margin would eventually be just over two seconds with Bautista completing a weekend of podium finishes having dropped from the lead to third at the final corner of the Superpole Race.
Bulega, from pole position in the Superpole Race finished fourth before his second place finish in Race 2. The final race of the day also marked the first points of the season for Jonathan Rea (Pata Prometeon Yamaha) who finished in eighth position.
With four different winners from the opening six races of the season the 2024 WorldSBK season has started in style!
P1 | Alvaro Bautista | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“I feel really happy! It’s been a tough weekend for us. In Superpole we lost a lot of position on the grid and then we had the penalty too. Today we had to come back in both races. It was a great battle in the Superpole Race and then the afternoon was a different type of race. It was more about managing the tyre consumption. I made a good start but I didn’t want to push at the beginning. Nicolo overtook me because my pace was really slow. I thought that I could push a little bit more so I took the lead again and then I tried to focus on getting the maximum I could while not overusing the tyre. It’s been a long time since my last win so we’re going to celebrate!”
P2 | Nicolo Bulega | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“I tried to do something different today compared to yesterday. Yesterday I was very fast in the beginning but I destroyed the tyre. I decided to follow Alvaro and copy him. At the end of this race my tyre life was better compared to yesterday but Alvaro was very fast today. Congratulations to him. Thanks to my team because our bike was good!”
P3 | Toprak Razgatlioglu | ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team
“I am happy but the last race was very difficult. Ducati was very strong, especially in the last sector. At the start of the race I stayed with them but then the rear tyre started to spin a lot and I started to save my tyre. To take three podium places this weekend is incredible. My team worked very hard this weekend. We’re still not 100% but to win two races in Catalunya and another podium is really good. I’m looking forward to Assen, and I hope we’ll be fighting for the win there as well!”
