Bautista gets back to winning ways

Bautista Gets Back To Winning WaysThe first Aruba.it Racing – Ducati one-two of the season saw Alvaro Bautista claim the honours in Race 2 ahead of Nicolo Bulega

A third podium of the season sees Bulega extend his Championship lead to 12 points. Toprak Razgatlioglu claimed back to back race victories for ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team by winning the Tissot Superpole Race before taking third in Race 2.

The final day of the Pirelli Catalunya Round saw a daring last corner move from Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK) surprise Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) to take the victory in the Tissot Superpole Race. The Turkish rider became the first BMW rider since Chaz Davies in 2013 to take back to back WorldSBK wins. Despite having to settle for a podium in Race 2 this was a superb weekend for Razgatlioglu who now sits fourth in the Championship standings.

The much touted battle of Alvaro Bautista versus Nicolo Bulega played out in Race 2. On this occasion it was double WorldSBK Champion Bautista who used his guile to win. The victory margin would eventually be just over two seconds with Bautista completing a weekend of podium finishes having dropped from the lead to third at the final corner of the Superpole Race.

Bulega, from pole position in the Superpole Race finished fourth before his second place finish in Race 2. The final race of the day also marked the first points of the season for Jonathan Rea (Pata Prometeon Yamaha) who finished in eighth position.

With four different winners from the opening six races of the season the 2024 WorldSBK season has started in style!

Bautista Gets Back To Winning WaysP1 | Alvaro Bautista | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“I feel really happy! It’s been a tough weekend for us. In Superpole we lost a lot of position on the grid and then we had the penalty too. Today we had to come back in both races. It was a great battle in the Superpole Race and then the afternoon was a different type of race. It was more about managing the tyre consumption. I made a good start but I didn’t want to push at the beginning. Nicolo overtook me because my pace was really slow. I thought that I could push a little bit more so I took the lead again and then I tried to focus on getting the maximum I could while not overusing the tyre. It’s been a long time since my last win so we’re going to celebrate!”

P2 | Nicolo Bulega | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“I tried to do something different today compared to yesterday. Yesterday I was very fast in the beginning but I destroyed the tyre. I decided to follow Alvaro and copy him. At the end of this race my tyre life was better compared to yesterday but Alvaro was very fast today. Congratulations to him. Thanks to my team because our bike was good!”

Bautista Gets Back To Winning WaysP3 | Toprak Razgatlioglu | ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team
“I am happy but the last race was very difficult. Ducati was very strong, especially in the last sector. At the start of the race I stayed with them but then the rear tyre started to spin a lot and I started to save my tyre. To take three podium places this weekend is incredible. My team worked very hard this weekend. We’re still not 100% but to win two races in Catalunya and another podium is really good. I’m looking forward to Assen, and I hope we’ll be fighting for the win there as well!”

Manzi wins shortened SSP race

Manzi Wins Shortened Ssp RaceA red flag following a Piotr Biesiekirski (Ecosantagata Althea Racing Team) crash saw Race 2 shortened to just six laps for the WorldSSP field.

Starting from pole position Adrian Huertas was in contention for the victory but the Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team rider suffered a late race crash while battling for the lead.

Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) emerged victorious with the Italian taking the sixth victory of his career. The win was the rider’s first of the season as he narrowly defeated Marcel Schroetter (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) to the line. The result continued Schroetter’s perfect podium record for the season but the German is still awaiting his first victory.

On the podium for the first time since Estoril 2020, Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha) was happy to round out the podium spots. Yari Montella continues to lead the Championship with the Barni Spark Racing Team rider finishing fourth to now hold an 11 point advantage.

“When you have a weekend like this with a win and a podium it feels amazing! During the first part of the race I was managing the tyre because yesterday we saw a big drop during the race. After the Red Flag I thought that maybe we’ll have a very short race but my team had a good strategy for it. I had a new tyre for the restart and we were able to win the race.”

First victory for Iglesias, first podium for KOVE

First Victory For Iglesias, First Podium For KoveAfter a penalty dropped him to 13th position yesterday Inigo Iglesias Bravo (Fusport-RT Motorsport by SKM-Kawasaki) was officially confirmed as a race winner in the WorldSSP300 class.

The Spaniard, in his 44th start, led across the line for the last three laps but critically held off the pack to claim the race victory.

A last corner reshuffle saw Julio Garcia Gonzalez (KOVE Racing Team) come through for second position and the first ever World Championship podium for the Chinese manufacturer. Bruno Ieraci (Team ProDina Kawasaki) finished third.

“Yesterday was a shame but I knew that I had the pace today. My bike was really good. I can ride this bike the way I want to. The last lap is always incredible but throughout the race I saved my tyre. I was thinking about the last lap. Then I pushed and was able to take the win. Today’s win is really important for me because last year, I took a step back in IDM. I was sad not to compete in WorldSSP300 but I’ve come back stronger.”

Red Plate Holders Prado & De Wolf Dominate Qualifying In Spain

It was joy for the Spanish crowd at the first European race of the season as home hero Jorge Prado took his customary holeshot and looked untouchable on his way to a runaway victory in the MXGP RAM Qualifying Race, whilst Kay de Wolf also re-asserted his authority with a decisive early move and withstood further pressure to win in MX2.

The crowd had already been warmed up by a brilliant win for another local hero, Daniela Guillen on her RFME GASGAS MX Junior Team machine, and they made an incredible noise for her as she won the opening race of the season in the WMX Women’s World Motocross Championship.  Then the opening EMX250 encounter saw a great scrap that resulted in victory for Beddini GASGAS MX Juniors rider Valerio Lata of Italy.
Red Plate Holders Prado & De Wolf Dominate Qualifying In Spain

Fastest in practice by over half a second, it’s clear that defending World Champion and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team leader Prado was in no mood to be beaten on home ground.  The trademark start technique was only nearly matched by Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP man Maxime Renaux, although Team Ship to Cycle Honda’s rookie Kevin Horgmo rushed into turn two in 2nd place! Romain Febvre for Kawasaki Racing Team and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star Jeffrey Herlings were mired deep in the pack, and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser had to fight past both Horgmo and Fantic Factory Racing rider Glenn Coldenhoff to get to 3rd at the end of the second lap.

Horgmo then crashed out of 5th and his teammate Valentin Guillod got collected in the incident, as did Standing Construct Honda’s lone ranger Pauls Jonass. Although Horgmo did not finish, all three riders are fine for the start of tomorrow’s Grand Prix races.

Nobody was getting anywhere near to Prado, and Gajser passed Renaux for 2nd at around half-distance, facing an impossible task to haul in the #1 plate holder.  The charge, as usual, came from Herlings.  “The Bullet” had a near-accident in the same corner that claimed Horgmo & co, but found a sweet line in front of the grandstands that was both fast, and kept him on the ground.  This he used to great effect, dispatching Kawasaki Racing Team rider Jeremy Seewer with three laps to go, and then Coldenhoff the very next lap to move up to 4th!  A late charge on Renaux’s third position only just fell short, but the Dutchman certainly has the speed around the Intu-Xanadú Arroyomolinos circuit, if only he could start with Prado.

The Champion extended his series lead by a point to four over Gajser, and Febvre is still third in the points after fighting back to 8th at the chequered flag. He is also leading the way in the Ram Award Experience that will reward the MXGP rider with the most RAM Qualifying Race wins at the end of season.

Jorge Prado:What to say, I got a good start! IT was my key to get a holeshot and then lead. I’ve been the fastest all day so i had the speed. I push a bit in the first lap and made a good gap. I really enjoyed the last lap too with the fans and on the triple. It’s great weekend and happy to start this home weekend in Spain with a win so let’s keep it for tomorrow as well”

Red Plate Holders Prado & De Wolf Dominate Qualifying In Spain

The MX2 RAM Qualifying Race was holeshot, once again, by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen, but Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team leader Simon Laengenfelder moved underneath the young Belgian through the third corner, followed by red plate holder De Wolf on the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing machine

De Wolf wasted no time to rapidly cut under Laengenfelder in the very next corner, and although the German, winner of both GP races here last year, pressured the Dutchman midway through the race, Kay got the hammer down again to pull clear and win by just over three seconds at the flag.

Behind them, Laengenfelder’s teammate Rossi battled past Sacha Coenen early, as F&H Kawasaki rookie Quentin Prugnieres moved Andrea Adamo wide by the Pit Lane, allowing the Champion’s Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Liam Everts through into 5th as he passed them both!

With three laps to go, after Sacha Coenen has been dropped down to 8th, Everts made a forceful move on Rossi to claim 3rd place, a fine return after missing the Argentina opener due to pre-season injury.

A mighty battle ensued behind them, as Rossi, Adamo, Lucas Coenen for Nestaan Husvarna Factory Racing, and Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Mikkel Haarup all fought over 4th place! Lucas just emerged on top in that battle and Haarup completed a masterful charge through from 10th to claim 5th at the line.

De Wolf celebrated in style and extended his Championship lead to 7 points over Laengenfelder.  Tomorrow’s races promise some absolute fireworks as the battle for the title continues!

Kay de Wolf: “It was a good Qualifying! At the start I tried to push a little bit wide but I went quickly up to second and then to first. I’m really happy about my riding and I just controlled it. Tomorrow we’ll have an extra 10 more minutes so an extra 10 minutes where I can show my physicality”

Casadei strikes back in stunning Race 2 showdown

Casadei Strikes Back In Stunning Race 2 ShowdownThe reigning Champion takes to the top to pip Garzo and a spectacular charge from Gutierrez to complete the podium.

Mattia Casadei (LCR E-Team) is back on top of the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship standings after a stunning charge to victory in Race 2 in Portugal. The Italian got his elbows out and held off Hector Garzo (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™) on the drag to the line, with rookie Oscar Gutierrez (Axxis-MSI) charging through to take third and his first MotoE™ podium.

Race 1 winner Nicholas Spinelli (Tech3 E-Racing) got the holeshot, holding off Garzo on take 2, but the Italian had already had some bad luck – judging his starting position ever so slightly wrong in the slot and given a double Long Lap not long after. Still, Garzo had to get it done on track before that, and the Spaniard shot past at Turn 1 on Lap 2 as Casadei overhauled teammate Eric Granado. Then, before Spinelli could take his penalty, the Italian suddenly slid out at Turn 10.

That left a gaggle of riders in a tight front group, and Casadei first struck for the front with four to go. Jordi Torres (Openbank Aspar Team), Alessandro Zaccone (Tech3 E-Racing) and Gutierrez were charging into contention too, and the latter didn’t even wait for Zaccone to serve his LLP given for his Race 1 incident, slicing past the Italian on his charge.

Garzo made the next move at the front, taking the lead back from Casadei as Gutierrez pipped past Torres, the rookie then onto the tail of Granado. But Granado’s elbows were also out and the Brazilian attacked his teammate at Turn 11, setting his sights on race leader Garzo.

But the main straight saw another shuffle as the slipstream came into play, and as the field fanned out Garzo kept his grip on the lead, with Gutierrez able to bag a two for one and slice up into second. Casadei headed teammate Granado, and it was going down to the wire.

Into Turn 1 for the final time, Gutierrez attacked Garzo as Casadei then shot past both, the Italian keeping a twitch under control to take over at the front. Garzo grabbed second again on the cutback too, and the top four locked into a tense push to the flag. But the reigning Champion just held on to take his first victory of the year, with Garzo’s second place putting him only a point behind on the way to Round 2. For Gutierrez, meanwhile, it’s a first ever MotoE™ podium in his first round as a full timer, having done two replacement rides in 2023.

Granado was forced to settle for fourth ahead of Torres and Lukas Tulovic (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™), with Kevin Zannoni (Openbank Aspar Team), Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE™), Andrea Mantovani (KLINT Forward Factory Team) and Massimo Roccoli (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse) completing the top ten.

That’s a wrap with Casadei back on top on track and in the standings. But it’s by a single point as MotoE™ prepares to return at le Mans –with another 14 races still to play for in 2024.Casadei Strikes Back In Stunning Race 2 Showdown

Spinelli takes the spoils in dramatic first MotoE race of 2024

Spinelli Takes The Spoils In Dramatic First Motoe Race Of 2024The Italian picks up where he left off to beat Garzo and Casadei in a close final lap – with drama aplenty for some fellow big hitters.

Nicholas Spinelli (Tech3 E-Racing) finished 2023 on the top step and that’s exactly how he’s started the 2024 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship: with victory. The Italian held off a hard-charging Hector Garzo (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™) and Mattia Casadei (LCR E-Team) on a close final lap as the top three escaped at the front following some drama for key names in the first showdown of the season.

Garzo took the holeshot after a storming start from Row 2, with Spinelli and Casadei on his tail as polesitter Eric Granado (LCR E-Team) dropped a few positions initially. Over the line for the first time Garzo had held onto it too, denying a Spinelli attack and the Italian also ceding to Casadei and Granado. Next time round Granado then grabbed a 2-for-1 into Turn 1 to take the lead, but not long after the first big drama hit as he slid out. Not long after that there was even more, with Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE™) crashing out.

A close top four of Casadei, Spinelli, Garzo and Zaccone were then in the lead, with Openbank Aspar Team’s Jordi Torres in touch too. But another huge twist was yet to come. On the penultimate lap down into Turn 5, Zaccone was just that bit too close to Torres and tagged the back of the number 81, sending both sliding out across the run off. The Italian was later also given a Long Lap penalty for the incident.

And then there were three. Onto the final lap, it was close. Spinelli attacked and took the lead at Turn 1, keeping it tidy. Another big opportunity for Garzo and Casadei to try and hit back, Turn 5, was off the table too as yellow flags remained out following the Zaccone-Torres crash. As the final sector dawned, Garzo was tagged on to the Tech3 rider in the lead, but there was no way through. Spinelli kept it perfect to the line for the first win of 2024, with Garzo and Casadei completing the podium.

Fourth goes to the returning Lukas Tulovic (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™), with Kevin Zannoni (Openbank Aspar Team) completing the top five. Massimo Roccoli (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse) beat Andrea Mantovani (Klint Forward Factory Team) to sixth. Kevin Manfredi (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse) was just ahead of a solid debut for Chaz Davies (Aruba Cloud MotoE™ Racing Team), with his fellow rookie and teammate Armando Pontone completing the top ten in touch too.Spinelli Takes The Spoils In Dramatic First Motoe Race Of 2024

Viñales victorious as Marc Marquez puts a last lap lunge on Martin

Viñales Victorious As Marc Marquez Puts A Last Lap Lunge On MartinThe number 12 takes his first ever Tissot Sprint win, the gloves come off for MM93 and Bagnaia rues an error on a showstopping Saturday.

Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) is a Tissot Sprint winner! A stunning showdown on the Algarve saw the Aprilia rider get his elbows out and then hold off Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) and Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing), who had their own battle down to the last lap. That culminated in a classic, brutal but clean lunge from the #93 to slice through into second and take his best Sprint result yet, with Martin relegated to third.

In the standings it’s closer than ever though, with Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) leading for much of the Sprint before heading wide at Turn 1 and able to stay in the battle – but not move up further than fourth.

At lights out, it was a brilliant start to the race from Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) who grabbed the holeshot and started storming away on the first lap. Polesitter Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) got swallowed by the front group as the Italian was demoted to P5 following an issue with his ride height device, meanwhile, Marc Marquez was one of those who found a way through on the number 23 – jumping into third place after passing Viñales too.Viñales Victorious As Marc Marquez Puts A Last Lap Lunge On Martin

Bagnaia was on a march though. He hit the front of the race early, trying to build a comfortable gap and quickly. On the chase, Marc Marquez soon found his way through to pass Viñales, and he held that for a handful of laps. But he wasn’t making headway, then running wide at the tricky Turn 5 as the task grew in size again.

Bagnaia seemed in the clear, over a second up the road from Viñales, with Martin and Marc Marquez not far off the Aprilia either. But then the #1 machine was suddenly sailing off at Turn 1, keeping it together but watching the front group flash past as he rejoined just ahead of Miller.

And so Viñales led the Sprint, with some closer and closer company. But with just over two to go, Martin was wide and that was some breathing space for the Aprilia. His, meanwhile, was being filled by a looming #93.

By the last lap, Viñales seemed to have it under control, and Martin vs Marquez was going to decide second and third places on the podium barring any serious late drama. And there was none – but there was a spectacular, on-the-edge, old skool lunge from a master of the craft.

Viñales Victorious As Marc Marquez Puts A Last Lap Lunge On MartinDown into Turn 5, there wasn’t really an open door and he wasn’t really in perfect striking distance, but Marc Marquez went for it… and he made it stick. Brutal, close, and just clean enough to be worth a handshake in parc ferme, the eight-time World Champion took his best Sprint result, holding Martin off to the line in a drag race too.

After rejoining ahead of Miller, Bagnaia managed to hold the KTM off to the flag, but it was close – and Bastianini was even closer as the trio took P4, P5 and P6.

Rookie Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) wasn’t far off that battle by the flag either. He took P7 and his best Sprint result yet, with Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) able to recover some positions from a tough qualifying. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) took the final point in the Sprint.

Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was one crasher, out early but rider ok.

And so, after a Saturday spectacle, a new Sprint winner heads into Sunday with another point to prove too – and from the front row. Viñales could become the first to win with three machines in the MotoGP™ era on Sunday… or there could be another twist in the tale. With the title race narrowed to just two points you do not want to miss the Portuguese GP on Sunday, with lights out at 14:00 (UTC)!Viñales Victorious As Marc Marquez Puts A Last Lap Lunge On Martin

Gonzalez pips Aldeguer and Canet for first Grand Prix pole

Gonzalez Pips Aldeguer And Canet For First Grand Prix PoleManuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) stole a maiden pole position in the final 20 seconds of qualifying at the Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal, beating new Fermin Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp) to the honour.

Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) lines up on the outside of the front row.

After struggling to set a fast lap in Practice, 13 riders took to action in Q1, with Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia), Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI), Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team), and Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) all making their way into Q2. As Q2 got underway, the pace was heating up as Aldeguer dipped into the 1:41 bracket and track temperature rose to 36C.

In the closing stages, nobody could catch Aldeguer until the last minute of the session when Canet and Gonzalez snatched pole position from the Spaniard. In a final lap attempt, Aldeguer gave it everything – but this time it was second at the line, giving Gonzalez a career first pole position and an all-time lap record in the delight to the Gresini squad.

Behind the trio on the front row of the grid will be Qatar GP winner Alonso Lopez (Beta Tools Speed Up), who pushed to the limit at the final corner. Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) springboarded from 11th to fifth in the final five minutes, and capping off a great Saturday for the QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™ team was Albert Arenas, who lines up for the Portuguese GP sixth. On the third row will be both MT Helmets – MSI riders of Ogura and teammate Sergio Garcia, with Chantra joining them in P9.Gonzalez Pips Aldeguer And Canet For First Grand Prix Pole

Rueda heads Kelso and Alonso in close Moto3 front row

Rueda Heads Kelso And Alonso In Close Moto3 Front RowJose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) stormed to pole after a near-perfect lap in the closing stages of the qualifying.

BOE Motorsports’ Joel Kelso was just 0.059 behind after a brave lap, ending a brilliant Saturday for the Australian. David Alonso (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team) joins them on the front row, unable to take a maiden pole position. Tactics were everything in the second qualifying session of the season after multiple riders missed out in Q1.

It was tight at the top in Q1, but after a stunning lap from Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets – MSI), it placed him top in the opening qualifying session alongside Nicola Carraro (LEVELUP – MTA), Filippo Farioli (SIC58 Squadra Corse), and Vicente Perez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who would all aim to make their mark in Q2. However, once Q2 started the riders did not wait to put in a fast lap with Alonso, Rueda, and Red Bull GASGAS Tech3’s Daniel Holgado who were battling for the top spot.

On the final run, BOE Motorsports sent both riders out early to do their final run, resulting in Kelso storming his way to a provisional pole and a new lap record. This provisional pole was short-lived as Perez came through on the final lap of qualifying, bagging a maiden pole position. Behind a tight front row will be Qatar GP podium finisher Holgado, who will line up alongside Riccardo Rossi (CIP Green Power) on the second row of the grid. Alongside them will be Dutchman Colin Veijer, who was the sole Liquid Moly Husqvarna Intact GP bike in Q2.

On the third row of the grid was Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets – MSI) who will start Sunday’s race from seventh – hoping to make his way through the field. Farioli managed to fight from Q1 to eighth on the grid, ahead of MLav Racing’s Scott Ogden and Stefano Nepa (LEVELUP – MTA), who rounds out a very competitive top 10. However, some big names missed out on the chance to fight for pole position including podium contender Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia) and Moto3™ veteran Tatsuki Suzuki (Liquid Moly Husqvarna Intact GP).

The Moto3™ field now gets set for an explosive second race of the season on Sunday at 11:00 (UTC), so make sure you keep up to date on motogp.com.

Stunning first win for Toprak and BMW

Stunning First Win For Toprak And BmwNicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) led the majority of the race. At one point the Italian had opened a four second lead but in Catalunya tyre consumption is a key factor and with a harder front tyre Razgatlioglu could close down that margin. The BMW rider would take the lead on the 20th and final lap.

Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), winner of six races in a row at this circuit, was handed a grid penalty that dropped him to the fifth row of the grid for the start. The reigning World Champion recovered to finish third and move up to fourth position in the Championship standings. Andrea Iannone (Team GoEleven) continued to impress as a rookie with a fourth position finish. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) started the race as the Championship leader and finished in sixth position. Lowes dropped a single point behind Bulega in the Championship standings with Razgatlioglu now third.

Having smashed the lap record in the Superpole session Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was aiming for a podium in Race 1 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Instead the Turkish star came from behind to claim the race victory in the opening race of the Pirelli Catalunya Round.

The win marked BMW’s first success since 2021 and validated Razgatlioglu’s decision to switch manufacturers for this season. His teammate, Michael van der Mark, had been combative throughout the race before falling to ninth place at the finish.

Stunning First Win For Toprak And BmwP1 | Toprak Razgatlioglu | ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team
“I’m really happy. Every day the team has done an unbelievable job and they have worked really hard. It’s important for me to win at this circuit because I’ve never won here. It’s been a dream of mine to win in Catalunya and this is unbelievable. It was a very hard race. My plan was to ride a little bit slower than the others and at the start I was waiting for Bulega because the other riders were pushing very hard. After Bulega had come past I thought I’d follow him. After two laps later I felt that I was pushing too hard. I slowed down to save the rear tyre. I thought a podium would be enough for me. In the last five laps here, the rear tyre has a big drop. I saw Iannone started to drop and then Bulega also dropped in the last five laps. I was pushing hard, especially on the brakes. On the last lap, I passed him. Maybe it was a good strategy for me.”

Stunning First Win For Toprak And BmwP2 | Nicolo Bulega | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“This was my first long race because we had pit stops in Australia. At the end of the race unfortunately I had no grip from the rear tyre. It was difficult for me to manage this and Toprak was very fast at the end. His lap times were better than mine. Maybe, I push a little too hard at the beginning of the race to overtake riders. Today, I learned something and I will be better prepared next time.”

Stunning First Win For Toprak And BmwP3 | Alvaro Bautista | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“It’s never easy because this track is so complicated. You have to manage the tyres. I was in the situation that I wanted to push more in the first laps to gain some positions but I also had to save my tyres. I tried to keep calm and to manage the tyre as well as possible. I had some problems in the big group because the front overheated. I had to save some slides with my elbow. When you are behind the other riders, the front tyre doesn’t work as expected and I struggled to brake hard or enter fast into corners. I think our best was to get a podium, but this was a surprise for me.”

Maiden victory for Huertas

Maiden Victory For HuertasAdrian Huertas converted pole position into his first career victory in the Supersport class.

The Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team rider kept a cool head under intense pressure from Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) to win by just over one second. The victory proved Huertas’ title credentials and with a front row start for Race 2 he is aiming for a double victory this weekend.

Manzi was one of the few riders to opt to use a harder rear tyre and was rewarded with his second podium of the season. Marcel Schroetter (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) is the only rider to finish on the podium in each race this season. The German was involved in a race-long battle with championship leader Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) who finished fourth to hold an 11 point championship lead over Schroetter.

A late mistake dropped Jorge Navarro (WRP-RT Motorsport by SKM-Triumph) to seventh but the Spaniard will start from pole position tomorrow.

Maiden Victory For HuertasP1 | Adrian Huertas | Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team
“I’m really happy about this victory because it was quite difficult after Australia. Today, we showed that we are one of the strongest, and that we can fight for the Championship. I think we managed the race very well and it paid off. I proved that I can lead a race and that’s really useful for me because I had never led a WorldSSP race. Now I know what that feels like and this is really important.”

Buis immediately proves his worth to KTM

Buis Immediately Proves His Worth To KtmHaving switched manufacturers for 2024 Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing) immediately showed KTM why he’s a double WorldSSP300 champion.

The Dutchman proved his mettle by keeping a cool head to come through from the fourth row of the grid to claim the 12th victory of his career.

The victory was confirmed by the FIM Race Stewards after Inigo Iglesias (Fusport-RT Motorsport by SKM-Kawasaki) was handed a post race penalty for causing an accident on the last lap. The penalty dropped the Spaniard to 13th position in the classification.

Rookie Aldi Mahendra (Team BrCorse) was classified in second position while Samuel di Sora (ARCO SASH MotoR University Team) was third having been forced to start the race from the back of the field.

For Race 2 the top nine positions on the grid are set by fastest laps in Race 1. Marc Garcia (KOVE Racing Team) will be rewarded for the fastest lap with pole position.

P1 | Jeffrey Buis | Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing
“That was incredible! This isn’t the way you want to win a race by being promoted but it’s good for the points. I’m very happy to be at the front with the KTM because it’s a new bike for me. The start of the race was good but then I started to fall back back because the tyre dropped and it’s new a feeling with that bike. I need to adjust my riding style to adapt to this. At the end I started to have more confidence and I could fight back to the front.”

Beast mode engaged: Bastianini edges out Viñales for pole

Beast Mode Engaged: Bastianini Edges Out Viñales For PoleA front row split by a tenth, Bagnaia P4 and Marc Marquez P8 after a dramatic Q2 sets the stage for a spectacle in Portugal.

Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) continued his statement weekend at the Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal with pole position on Saturday morning, Beast mode most definitely engaged. It’s close at the top, however, with Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) getting to within less than a tenth of the number 23 after a late charge. Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) completes the front row only a further 0.024 behind, setting the stage for some serious fireworks on the Algarve.

Q1 was a hard-fought battle to move through. Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing), Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) and home hero Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing) were just some of those with more than a shout of moving through, and it went down to the wire. Acosta was leading the way until a late overhaul from AM73, with the Gresini taking over on top by an infinitesimal 0.005. No one could overhaul that or split the two, so Acosta and Alex Marquez moved through, leaving Espargaro P13 on the grids ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) and Oliveira..Beast Mode Engaged: Bastianini Edges Out Viñales For Pole

Q2 began with sheer expectation and the field piled out of pitlane ready to deliver. The first drama came almost immediately as Marc Marquez slid out, the number 93 losing the rear round Turn 15 and sliding across the run off. The race was on to get back to the box and get back out. Then Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) went down, rider also ok, making it two big hitters looking to reset quick.

Meanwhile, the red sectors were coming in on the first runs. The first pacesetter was reigning Champion Bagnaia, who held the top by less than a tenth ahead of Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and FP2 pacesetter Viñales.

From there, the first mover was Martin as he took over on top, but Bastianini had a near instant riposte to cut another tenth off, making it #23-#89-#1 on the provisional front row. Then the red sectors starting coming in from Bagnaia again, but the final part of the lap put paid to that. One final lap was going to challenge Bastianini, and despite Marc Marquez being back out, it’s wasn’t his – it was Viñales’.

The Aprilia was up and had already proven plenty with that new FP2 lap record, but it wasn’t quite enough to take pole over the line, coming up short by just 0.082. So it’s the Beast of Bastianini back on top, ahead of Viñales and Martin relegated to P3 on the outside of the front row.Beast Mode Engaged: Bastianini Edges Out Viñales For Pole

Bagnaia heads up Row 2, with Miller starting from P5 as his speed continues to impress in Portugal. Sixth goes to Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) whose Round 2 continues to be a big leap forward from a tough Round 1.

The apprentice edges out the master on Row 3. Acosta is P7 at the head of it, just hundredths ahead of Marc Marquez as the number 93 didn’t quite find the fireworks on his second run. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) takes P9, ahead of Binder who, like MM93, couldn’t quite bring the noise on his final attempt after that early crash.

And so the grids are decided, and they set quite a stage. The Tissot Sprint promises much on Saturday afternoon, and that’s just the first serving of the world’s most exciting sport at full throttle on the rollercoaster. Tune in for two stunning showdowns, with lights out on Saturday at 15:00 (UTC) and Sunday at 14:00.Beast Mode Engaged: Bastianini Edges Out Viñales For Pole

Granado grabs first pole of the season from Spinelli and Casadei

Granado Grabs First Pole Of The Season From Spinelli And CasadeiThe stage is set for the opener as the Brazilian comes out swinging – and Ferrari faces a fight back.

Eric Granado (LCR E-Team) will start the first races of the 2024 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship season from pole position after storming back to the top in qualifying at the Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal. The Brazilian showed his hand to deny Nicholas Spinelli (Tech3 E-Racing) by just 0.067, with reigning Champion Mattia Casadei (LCR E-Team) forced to settle for third on the grid for the first two races of 2024.

Some other big names have a little more work to do, setting up a Saturday to remember at Round 1. 2023 MotoE™ runner-up Jordi Torres (Openbank Aspar Team) starts from seventh, and after some issues on Friday, Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE™) gets ready for his assault on the crown from 11th.

In Q1, the Italian was just edged out as Miquel Pons (Axxis-MSI) and the returning Lukas Tulovic (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™) moved through in a tight field. However, once Q2 got underway it was all change again, and it went to the wire. Both Spinelli and Casadei looked to be challenging Granado, but the final sector saw it fade away and the Brazilian takes that coveted first pole of the season.

A strong showing from Hector Garzo (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™) puts him at the head of the second row, and it was tight as he slots in ahead of Alessandro Zaccone (Tech3 E-Racing) by just 0.012. Rookie Oscar Gutierrez (Axxis-MSI), who did two rounds last season but two rounds only, impressed to complete the top six.

Torres takes P7 ahead of Tulovic, who is racing on the Ducati V21L for the first time, with Kevin Zannoni completing an Openbank Aspar Team sandwich around Tulovic on Row 3. Aiming to immediately join that party if not even further forward once the lights go out, Ferrari sees lights out from P11.

Make sure to tune in for Race 1 at 12:15, before the second serving of electric action at 16:10 (UTC)!Granado Grabs First Pole Of The Season From Spinelli And Casadei

Bastianini, Miller & Marc Marquez grab the limelight on Day 1

Bastianini, Miller & Marc Marquez Grab The Limelight On Day 1The rollercoaster delivers a tantalising top ten as some key names head for Q1 – and some familiar ones fight back.

Day 1 on the rollercoaster is in the books and it’s quite a trio leading the way to Q2 at the Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal. Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) blistered his way to the top by 0.118, with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jack Miller the closest on the chase in second as he got back into the top echelons. Then comes Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), still within only 0.153 of Bastianini at the top, and after topping FP too. The #93 also had a low drama crash – seemingly the limit testing kind – in the afternoon…

When the afternoon session began, however, it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing at the top, first Miller and then teammate Brad Binder. Miller also had an extra eventful start to the session, crashing at turn five in the first 10 minutes of Practice, rider ok. The next gambit saw Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Ducati) steal the KTM thunder, nudging the RC-16s off the top, but there was plenty left to shuffle in the ultra-tight top ten.

As ever, the tension mounted as the clock ticked down, with those guaranteed 10 places in Q2 up for grabs. The fast laps came thick and fast, but there were a good few spills too, riders all ok but pushing to and over the limit. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) and Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) crashed within seconds of each other, and then it was Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing) and Luca Marini (Repsol Honda Team) minutes later.

Bastianini, Miller & Marc Marquez Grab The Limelight On Day 1After Bastianini had taken to the top, that’s where he stayed amid the drama, throwing down the gauntlet on Day 1. Miller made his late lunge for glory to slot into second, forcing Marc Marquez to settle for third. Martin ends the session in fourth, and the #89 was just ahead of Binder, who sneaked inside the top five in the closing minutes.

Sixth was a big statement from Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) after a very tough start to the season, with the Italian edging out Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) by just 0.002. The number 12 was also quick in Free Practice too, second behind MM93.

Bastianini, Miller & Marc Marquez Grab The Limelight On Day 1Reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) was outside a provisional place in Q2 until the very final few minutes, moving up to P7 in real time but that becoming P8 once the clock ran out. Then comes another headline-making duo: Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) and teammate Alex Rins complete the top ten on the Algarve, both straight through to Q2. Not since 2022 have the Iwata marque had both riders straight through. It was a late one too, bumping out rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), Alex Marquez and Espargaro as they now head for Q1 on Saturday morning.

Bastianini on top. Miller in the mix. And Marc Marquez looking for the limits. That’s just the top three headlines as we head into Super Saturday, so tune in for more MotoGP™ as the world’s most exciting sport heads back out on the rollercoaster!

Lopez Edges Out Canet By 0.013 On Day 1In a fast and furious session, Alonso Lopez (Beta Tools SpeedUp) ended Practice 1 on top as he picked up where he left off in Qatar, setting a stunning 1:42.362 to edge out out Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) by just 0.013.

Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) was only a further 0.170 behind as it got tight at the top in the Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal.

Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) was fourth after topping the day’s opening Free Practice session, ahead of OnlyFans American Racing Team’s Marcos Ramirez. New Ducati signing Fermin Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp) took P6 ahead of Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team). 2023 runner up Tony Arbolino(Elf Marc VDS Racing Team), Albert Arenas (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Celestino Vietti rounding outside the top 10.

Alonso throws down the gauntlet on Friday

Alonso Throws Down The Gauntlet On FridayAfter a lack of running in Free Practice due to track conditions, Moto3™ was back on track for a frantic 35-minute session in the afternoon, and with one protagonist for much of it.

Winner of the Qatar GP and current Championship leader, David Alonso(CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team) was in the serious groove, at times over a second clear, to take top honours. By the end of play though, BOE Motorsports’ Joel Kelsoset a remarkable 1:47.239 without a tow, cutting Alonso’s gap down to just 0.037. Matteo Bertelle (Rivacold Snipers Team) rounded out the top three, but it’s six tenths back to the Italian before the timesheets tighten up.

Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) finished the day in fourth ahead of CIP Green Power’s Riccardo Rossi, Filippo Farioli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) and Angel Piqueras (Leopard Racing) in seventh. MLav Racing’s Scott Ogden was eighth in Practice 1, edging out Qatar podium finisher Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) and Stefano Nepa (LEVELUP – MTA) – rounding out the top 10.

After more limited track time on Day 1, however, it can all change again on Saturday!

Bulega and Bautista set to battle it out in Catalunya

Bulega And Bautista Set To Battle It Out In CatalunyaRookie sensation Nicolo Bulega continues to amaze with the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati leading the way from his teammate Alvaro Bautista.

Toprak Razgatlioglu set the fastest time in FP1 and was third fastest on the combined times just ahead of his teammate Michael van der Mark. The busiest rider on track was Andrea Locatelli with 41 laps with his teammate Jonathan Rea also focusing on race simulations.

In near perfect conditions at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati riders, Nicolo Bulega and Alvaro Bautista, led the way in WorldSBK. It was the rookie sensation Bulega who set the pace on the opening day with Bautista two tenths of a second adrift. Ducati has won seven races in a row in Catalunya and will be aiming to continue that form in tomorrow’s 20 lap race.

During practice teams focused on understanding tyre consumption in the afternoon. With new development options available from Pirelli the aim for riders and engineers was to understand the best solutions available to them. The Pata Prometeon Yamaha team split their resources with Jonathan Rea and Andrea Locatelli using different tyre combinations. Both completed race simulations to end the day fifth and sixth fastest.

Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was third fastest on the combined times. Having been competitive at the recent two day Supported Test the Turkish rider is confident of fighting at the front throughout this weekend.

Championship leader Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) had issues in the morning that limited his running. The 33 year old completed 27 laps and ended the day 14th fastest.

P1 | Nicolo Bulega | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“It was a good first day because my feeling with the bike was good. I tried both SCX tyres and I’m still not very sure of the decision for the race. We have to check some data and try to understand which can work better for the race. My race pace was also fast in the afternoon but we need to try and improve because our rivals will try something to catch me.”

Bulega And Bautista Set To Battle It Out In CatalunyaP2 | Alvaro Bautista | Aruba.it Racing – Ducati
“In the morning the bike felt similar to other times that I have ridden it this season. I am trying to give my best feedback to the engineers and explain what I feel on the bike. The bike felt much better in the afternoon and it helped me to ride as I wanted to. I’m really happy and now it’s time to keep going in this direction. We have another day tomorrow and hopefully we can improve my feeling step by step. In the afternoon I tried the SCX and the new development tyre and I didn’t feel a really big difference in the performance level. The drop is not really big. Until now I couldn’t ride the bike as I wanted to. I’m happy for Nicolo because it shows that the bike is working well. His performance is a good reference.”

P3 | Toprak Razgatlioglu | ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team
“I focused on the long run in the afternoon. It looks like the Ducati is very strong but we know that at this track the Ducati is always very strong. I tried my best today but we are still working with the bike to help with grip. We did a long run,13 laps, and the times were mainly 1m41 and then 42’s. The rear grip improved for us and is better than before now. I hope we are fighting with Ducati but it looks like Ducati’s pace is very strong. But maybe the race is different. In general I’m happy but we need to improve the bike grip.”

Huertas Aims For The Win From Pole PositionAdrian Huertas claimed his second consecutive Superpole in the Supersport class.

A mid-session red flag, caused by a technical problem for Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), led to a delay but once the action resumed the Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team rider asserted his dominance to take pole position by 0.274s.

Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) complete the front row of the grid.

Historic first pole position for Kove

Historic First Pole Position For KoveHistory was made in the Supersport 300 class as Kove claimed the first World Championship pole position for a Chinese manufacturer.

It was a new Superpole lap record from Julio Garcia Gonzalez (KOVE Racing Team) with the 17-year-old claiming his first Superpole success.

Tomorrow’s opening race of the season will see three different manufacturers on the front row with Daniel Mogeda (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kawasaki) and Matteo Vannucci (Pata Yamaha AG Motorsport Italia) joining Garcia in the top three.

A late session yellow flag cost the riders an opportunity to set fastest times in the closing minutes with reigning World Champion Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing) unable to improve on the 11th fastest time.

P1 | Julio Garcia Gonzalez | KOVE Racing Team
“I’m really happy because this is my first pole position and the first pole position for Kove. This is a new bike but I am really enjoying working with the team. Brake Line Upgrade for KTM Duke 125

Brake Line Upgrade For Ktm Duke 125UK-made, Venhill braided brake hose kits for KTM’s lightweight Duke

Venhill’s new KTM Duke 125 Front and Rear Brake Hose Kits are a quick and easy way to boost stopping power, as well as improving feel and feedback.

Venhill hoses are precision made in their UK factory around a DuPont® Teflon® core. Highly heat-resistant, it won’t soften, expand or lose shape when it gets hot. Combined with a smooth, consistent bore it delivers more efficient fluid flow to the callipers, increasing braking force and feel at the lever and pedal.

Stainless steel braid is wrapped around the core, to stop further pressure expansion during hard braking. For a long life and lasting finish, a waterproof PVC jacket is then bonded on to the braid.

Simple to fit, the kits are tailor-made for the Duke and feature corrosion-free, stainless steel swivel socket nuts at both ends. These make them much easier to position than hoses with the fittings crimped onto the end.

For complete peace of mind, every set that leaves the factory is pressure tested to 1500psi.

Front and rear kits are available for all 2013-2023 Duke 125s. They come in a choice of 11 colours – including orange, to match up with KTM’s signature shade. The kits will also fit the 200cc and 390cc versions of the Duke.

Prices are £66.60 for the front and £66.60 for the rear (including VAT), both of which contain two hoses and all necessary fittings.

Find them quickly and easily – and order in ten different colour ways – using the www.venhill.co.uk Part Finder. Brake Line Upgrade For Ktm Duke 125

5 Minutes with…. “Piggy”

Turn One
“5 Minutes with….” produced by First Turn Media
5 Minutes With …. “piggy”If you have listened to the popular UK podcast “Chasing the Racing” you will no doubt have heard of “Piggy”.

We caught up with him for a quick chat while he was in Jerez for pre-season testing with Phil Crowe, whom for the 2024 season will be racing the TT and Amoy Road Races. Phil kicks off his season with NG Road Racing at their first round at Oulton Park at the end of March as he begins the process of building his 2024 race license for his TT campaign.

SBN: Piggy, lets chat your backstory – How did you get into motorsport?

Piggy: I got into motorbikes really from my dad, he always had motorbikes. My cousin took me to my first racing event and got me into the racing side of things sometime in 1972, when he took me to Cadwell Park, together we went to most short circuit racing.  It wasn’t until I finished my apprenticeship with Marshalls, as my exams were always in the early summer did I manage to get to watch my first TT. I remember sitting there watching races and thinking, what do I need to do to become a mechanic for one of these teams, in hind sight had I approached a team back then I probably could have got into the mechanics side of it a lot sooner.

I started helping my mate who raced in the Manx Grand Prix and that really started me working in the industry and becoming involved with club racing. My “big break” as they say really came when I met Chrissy (Rouse) and his dad and that’s when I started to work within the Superbikes area of racing.5 Minutes With …. “piggy”

SBN: What do you specifically do now and for whom?

Piggy: This year, for the Roads I will be helping Phil Crowe at both the TT and Armoy Road Races, I don’t think he’s doing the North West, though that may change. What Phil doesn’t know about a BMW 1000 isn’t worth knowing and the lads are great at Crowe Performance.  I was already working with Dom (Herbertson) for this year, I knew he was in talks with Burrows Engineering Team but when the deal was done they have their own mechanics and I wasn’t needed anymore.  Then within British Superbikes,  I am with Astro JJR Racing Team on the Suzuki’s. I met James Jackson in the Haribo team when Chrissy rode for them and the Haribo team are great bunch of lads to work with so it was an easy decision to go there this year, though I can’t say who the riders for the 2024 season is just yet.  I am looking forward to this year, its tough at times as Chrissy is never far from my thoughts, but when we are at BSB he feels closer.5 Minutes With …. “piggy”

SBN: What’s your most enjoyable event on the calendar?

Piggy: Out of the short circuits I always really enjoy Thruxton, it’s a really fast track, its good that. With the roads, if I absolutely had to pick one it would be the TT, nothing like it but as a spectator me and my mate would go to Misano and I used to really enjoy that.

SBN: During the course of your work, what’s your least favourite task?

Piggy: That’s proper awkward that, each bike has its own thing that can be a nightmare but cleaning them all is the worst, unless you’re using something that smells nice!

SBN: What do you get up to outside of the Paddock?

Piggy: I don’t have any quirky hobbies, nothing like that, it’s a lot of work in between to be honest and don’t really have time, if I’m not racing I work for myself now. I worked for Marshalls for 23 years working on lorries and heavy plant machine, welding, lathe machines and the machines that make block paving, which led me into my current work in block paving and landscaping, so I always have something to catch up on. I did do a parachute jump though for charity once and I have done a bit of clay pigeon shooting on a Sunday morning otherwise I’m pretty much working on or around the bikes, there is always something to get on with.

Spending a few days with Piggy in the box at Jerez, it’s clear to see he is a real calming asset to the teams with whom he works, bringing a genuine warmth and humour. Rounding it out with the Great Jerez debate we all had, Piggy, what’s the one food you couldn’t live without? “ a Cheese and Jam Sandwich”  – delivered with his warming and infectious laugh. The debate on the sandwich filling continues…

Thank you to Piggy for taking the time to chat with us, we wish you and the teams you are working with all the best for the 2024 season!

I was delighted to have the opportunity to try the RST Endurance jacket and trousers. I was sent one in black colour, which is always good as it goes with any bike but I must admit, it does lose some of the detail of the design and styling that other colours give.

This track is insane!”: Thursday talking points from Portugal

This Track Is Insane!": Thursday Talking Points From PortugalAfter a showstopping start in Qatar, we’re already back on track this weekend for the Grande Premio Tissot de Portugal, with the stunning Autodromo Internacional do Algarve playing host.

The week started with news that Fermin Aldeguer would be moving up to MotoGP™ next season with Ducati, so the current Beta Tools SpeedUp rider joined the second press-conference line-up on Thursday.

Once the podcast had welcomed Enea Bastianini, the first press conference saw reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) joined by Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing), aka the current top three in the Championship.

Then, after news earlier this week that Fermin Aldeguer would be moving up to MotoGP™ next season with Ducati, the current Beta Tools SpeedUp rider joined the second press-conference, alongside Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), rookie Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) and Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing).

PECCO BAGNAIA
How much confidence do you bring into this weekend?

“First of all, I want to say I love this track, it is one of my favourites with a lot of up and downhill sections. It is a mix of Mugello and Sachsenring and I love to ride here. Last year was a perfect start to the season like it was in Qatar, so I am quite confident as I think with the 2024 bike we can be more competitive in some areas of the track, so I am looking forward to starting the weekend.”.

BRAD BINDER
How high are expectations after round one?

“Obviously, it went well in Qatar it was fantastic to start the season with two podiums. Coming here is really exciting for me as it where last year that we started to find our bearings and if we have a look at what we ran here last year and where we finished the season it was two worlds apart so I am really keen to go out for FP1 to see where our base is and see how everything works. This track is insane, it is so up and down and flowing in some places, and stop and go in others, and it is something that you need a different bike for. I think our bike will be strong here as Jack showed last year and I think this year we stand a chance of being even stronger.”

JORGE MARTIN
You said in Qatar you weren’t 100% with the GP24, how do you see your potential here?

“Well, let’s see. It is difficult to say now but for sure it’s a track I enjoy, last year I was strong, I had some issues in the race but I think the pace was really good to battle. Let’s see I feel I am in a good condition so let’s see if I can feel better with the bike, but I think I am finding the way.”

MARC MARQUEZ
What do you expect this weekend?

“Of course, the approach for the weekend is the exact same as Qatar and obviously we will have a new factor which is we will head to a circuit straight into a race weekend. This changes our planning as straight away in FP1 you need to have a lap time and be fast and that was the most difficult thing in Malaysia and Qatar, that first day I was struggling a bit so let’s see if here in Portimao I can start in the top 10 positions straight away to jump into Q2. That is the main target but let’s see where we are in a completely different race track.”

On Acosta’s overtake:
“As I said last year and I reconfirm that he will be one of the guys in the future for MotoGP and the present because as he showed in Qatar he has enough talent and before the race, I already said that you are fast with any type of bike and he was super fast on those laps. I am sure he will learn to manage tyres and he will be much better in the next races.”

Ans his save earlier in the Qatar GP

“I already said it was a good one, you really need to believe in the bike to do that. That one was a good one, he has a really good riding style and when they jump from Moto2 they have super good corner speed. When I followed Pedro for the two laps during the race he was super fast in the fast corners and made the difference.”

PEDRO ACOSTA
How much are you looking forward to riding a MotoGP bike around Portimao?

“For sure I want it to be a nice weekend, Portimao is one of my favourite circuits on the calendar, with Australia. Like Marc said it is going to be difficult as it’s the first track that we’ve come to with a MotoGP bike without testing, so this will be tricky. We will have all the support from the Factory Team and all the engineers for this so let’s try and make a consistent weekend.”

How did it feel to overtake Marc?

“It was a super nice race because the first lap was tricky for me after the moment with Jack at the start. The feeling of the bike was amazing, as since Moto3™ I have not had this feeling with the front tyre to brake at the last moment and go down the inside. The overtake was nice but he managed the whole race better so we don’t have to think too much about the overtake.”

On that Qatar GP save:

“I’ve seen many races on the TV and I’ve seen many of Marc’s saves like this. It was a good save but also it is normal in FP1 with all of the sand that is always in Qatar. Like I said it is a track I know more or less the grip and the tyres. Now we come to a track with different asphalt and also different tyre compounds compared to Qatar. We need to start from zero with our feet on the ground and just not think too much about the Qatar race as it was unreal.”

MIGUEL OLIVEIRA
What’s possible this weekend?

“It is a different situation as I know to come from an average result like in Qatar to come here and say I am ready to challenge for the victory is maybe too ambitious but I know what I am capable of doing. Nowadays the grid in MotoGP™ is very particular, you can be from 12th to first in a split second. Everything is possible and I don’t want to create any limitations or too much expectations. I am still adapting to the bike but I feel I am making steps in the right direction and hopefully this weekend straight away on Friday we can show we have the speed for the top 10. Then obviously the complexity of Qualifying well and doing the race, we need to overcome those challenges of terms of results on Saturday and Sunday.”

FERMIN ALDEGUER
How special is it to know you’ll be racing Pedro, Marc, and Miguel in MotoGP™ next year?

“I am really happy to announce my jump to MotoGP™ in 2025 but now it is time to stay focused in the Moto2™ class. In Qatar, I felt pressure from people saying I am the favourite rider but I have to manage this pressure. My season will start here in Portimao with a good feeling, but I am very happy to be going to MotoGP with Ducati.”

Long-serving EWC team National Motos Honda wants payback

Long-serving Ewc Team National Motos Honda Wants PaybackLong-serving team National Motos Honda heads into the 2024 FIM Endurance World Championship ‘motivated by revenge’ following its late-race Bol d’Or heartache last season.

Swiss brothers Sébastien and Valentin Suchet, plus Frenchman Guillaume Raymond, were on course for the Superstock category victory – and the FIM Endurance World Cup for Teams’ title – at Circuit Paul Ricard last September. That was until a technical fault struck in the final 25 minutes of the 24-hour race, robbing them of double delight.

But the outfit, an offshoot of a successful Honda motorcycle dealership network based in La Défense, a commercial district of Paris, is determined to bounce back during what will be its 53rd season in endurance racing.

Stéphane Haddadj, who runs National Motos Honda along with his brother and Eric Collin, the team’s Technical Manager, said: “We head into this new season of the FIM Endurance World Championship with a motivation of revenge on 2023 following the cruel and frustrating end to the Bol d’Or. But we also head into the new season with a great respect for the sport and our competitors in the Superstock category, particularly with many teams also racing the Honda CBR1000RR.”

As well as giving the opportunity for its riders Guillaume Raymond and Sébastien and Valentin Suchet, National Motos Honda will again work in close collaboration with l’INCM, the Institut National du Cycle et du Motocycle (National Institute of Cycle and Motorcycle). The long-standing partnership gives students the chance to gain practical experience by working as part of the National Motos Honda team during race weekends.

National Motos Honda will continue to shine a spotlight on the work of ARSLA, which helps those suffering from Charcot’s disease.

Other key partners include Bendy’s, Dunlop, Motul, Onair, 011ze, Honda Assurance FMA and Honda Moto France.

“This adventure is also and above all a human and passion adventure with our crew of pilots, our volunteers and the students of the INCM,” Haddaj said. “But without our partners this season would not be possible.”

Despite its Bol d’Or setback, National Motos Honda finished a close runner-up to Team 33 Louit April Moto in the FIM Endurance World Cup for Teams, in which all outfits use Dunlop tyres, the official supplier. The undoubted highlight of National Motos Honda’s 2023 campaign was its Superstock category victory in the 24H SPA EWC Motos last June.

And it didn’t leave the Bol d’Or empty handed after it was presented with the prestigious Anthony Delhalle EWC Spirit Trophy, awarded at EWC events in tribute to Frenchman Delhalle. He won the Bol d’Or in 2011 and featured in an FIM Endurance World Championship title-winning line-up five times – but lost his life in a testing accident at the start of 2017 season.

The 47th edition of the 24 Heures Motos opens the 2024 FIM Endurance World Championship season from 18-21 April. Ticket information is available HERE.

The key models on offer that are part of KYMCO’s 60th birthday celebrations, include the Agility City+ 125 scooter and VSR 125 motorcycle, which have both had their limited time offers extended until further notice.

60 Years Of Kymco Celebrated With Unmissable OffersThe Agility City+ 125 is a comfortable, safe and agile scooter, with an RRP of £2,559. It’s now offered with free on-the-road (OTR) fees within list price, as well as a free SHAD 29-litre Top Box – saving customers an average of £230.
